About the Author
Jan has been an adventurer since she was ten years old when her mother put her on a bus in Hartford, CT to visit grandparents in Hyannis, MA. She was entranced by the process of starting in one destination and ending in another. Throughout the next sixty plus years her passion for travel and adventure was enhanced every time she took a trip. Yet, she learned that adventures can be had whether walking across the street, enjoying a day trip around her home State of Connecticut, or taking a road trip to the west. Her first book was "Cruising Connecticut with a Picnic Basket", a day tripping, picnicking and recipe book published in 2006 with 2nd and 3rd Editions in 2008 and 2012.

An Emotionally Engaging, Well Organized Travelogue

1. STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION - a lot of content here put together so well. This book is (a) how to; (b) adventure story; (c) travelogue; (d) inspiration journey.
2. HOW TO: Want to road trip out west to some of America's most beautiful natural parks and wonders? Start with this book. It will help you decide what you want to see, for how long; how to get there; routes to take; how to pack (food and clothing) for the road; free (networking) and paid (bargain) lodging that is fun, safe and clean.
3. ADVENTURE STORIES: Stunning hikes, drives and unique encounters.
4. TRAVELOGUE: Emotionally engaging reflection about this particular journey, others the author has taken and the Mother of All Trips: Life.
5. INSPIRATION: Folks tell me all the time, "I'd like to travel so many places but I have no on to go with." Really? What about yourself? In the same way you've invested in family, friends, employers and colleagues, invest time in YOU. Take yourself on one of those trips on your bucket list. The author has done this here and many times over (she shares some of those stories in this book as well).

A Woman's Journey that Steinbeck Would be Proud of

Mann invites us along on her 5-week road trip out west and during this journey we learn as much about ourselves as we do the sites she visits. While the thread of her story is about a solo trip to the national parks and what she learns about herself and life along the way, Mann also weaves in other stories from an African safari and a genealogy search in England. I found myself reminiscing about some of the same sites I visited 35 years ago as a young, college-aged woman. You might think Mann is a young woman, too. She is -- in spirit. "How I Won the West" will inspire you to take your own journey whether you ever leave your home or not.

I loved this book!

It had just the right blend of facts, humor and personal revelations that anyone can relate to. I laughed out loud at Jan singing to the bears, talking about the Horse in the Diamond Belle Salon and searching aimlessly for the rock climbers in Yosemite. I could relate to the chapters, Once a Mommy and Packing is the Pitts, and just when I thought the wealth of information about traveling the West was over, Jan gave us her A-Z facts. How I Won the West is a Winner!
