In God We Trust?, by Patrick Nachtigall

Americas Founding Fathers often said that a higher power was superintending their work. The motto, In God We Trust, has appeared on American coinage since 1956. So a casual observer might think that the United States is a very pious country, but Patrick Nachtigall observes that most Americans actually have three gods: Religious Freedom Radical Individualism Materialism Even Evangelical Christians hold these things to be sacred, which has led them into moral compromise and strikingly unbiblical behavior. What lies ahead for American Evangelicalism-and for America as a whole? A young Christian leader offers a provocative perspective. In God We Trust? challenges American Evangelicals to reexamine what they believe and practice, and calls for a life of radical faith in the years ahead.

For those who have ears to hear
By Jerry Hickson
If there is just one book (besides the Bible) that an American evangelical should read, it is "In God we Trust?" by Patrick Nachtigall. Patrick does an able job of getting to the core of what is killing much of the church in the United States. He illuminates what for many is a blind side: that being a patriotic American and being a faithful Christian are not the same thing. He exposes the mythology that one hand claims that we are the greatest nation on earth while at the same time claiming that we are a fallen people destined for judgment. With his usual insight on global cultures, Patrick discusses the positives and negatives about the growth of Christianity in the rest of the world. Then he offers insightful projections on our future that are surprisingly optimistic. A must read: especially for those whose aspiration is to “take back our country” for Jesus.

Pleasantly Surprised!
By Mary B
I'm only halfway through, but this book is exceptionally well written so far! First thing I noticed is that it's very balanced, the author isn't bashing America, he speaks glowingly of the United States, but he is asking for serious minded Christians to consider how "being American" affects their faith. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to honestly evaluate these issues.

Separating God and Culture
By Teresa Jackson
This book is a strong, honest critique of U.S. evangelicals in the light of history.

It walks a tenuous line between love of country and church and the way patriotism has corrupted Christianity.

Its intended audience is strictly evangelical Christians, which is too bad, because there is much here that would appeal to mainline Protestants, Catholics, and non-religious alike.
