What a breath of fresh air! This book should be required reading for anyone thinking of getting a puppy of any breed. Bringing a pup into a household and raising her successfully requires advance planning and strategies. The descriptions of how pup feels about leaving her mom and litter and being thrust into a strange new environment are so insightful. Considerations like "do I have enough time to devote to this wonderful and deserving baby?" "Have I done everything possible to keep pup safe?" "Do I have friends and family lined up to help me with this little one if I need a break or have an emergency?" As a dog trainer, it is disheartening to get call after call from people who embarked upon puppy ownership without consideration of the puppy's needs. Reading this book in advance of puppy adoption will help anyone interested in raising the very best dog to adulthood.

There are a lot of books out there on the topic of dogs. Most of them I usually just pass over. This book is different. For starters, this book really puts the responsibility of the dog's behaviour where it belongs - with us. I found the concept of the 3 core questions especially useful. 1) Am I loving? 2) Am I consistent? 3) Am I acting wisely? Very powerful, especially when our puppy pees on the carpet - who remembers these questions before reacting? Well, I do now and highly recommend this book for any "conscious dog owner". While the book teaches a wealth of tips and techniques for the growing puppy, it is so much more than that. It really teaches the dog owner to understand life from the puppy's perspective and connect with our dogs on a much deeper level. What a great and novel book for puppy owners. I highly recommend it.

As the owner of 3 goldens over the past 30 years, I learned a great deal by reading this book. Martina Becher helped me realize how I can be an even better parent to my next puppy. She helped me see things through the puppy's eyes and to know the optimal results are possible. She helped me realize a few mistakes I have made and also gave clear direction for how I might have approached things differently. I would recommend this book to anyone adopting a puppy and especially to those considering a golden. This breed is especially sweet and sensitive. They deserve the kind of care this book reveals.
