Princess Alice: Countess of Athlone, by Theo Aronson

She would have made a wonderful queen - she certainly was a splendid princess.

Princess Alice was the daughter of Queen Victoria's youngest son Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany.

She grew up under the watchful eye of Queen Victoria and in 1904 married Prince Alexander of Teck, afterwards known as the Earl of Athlone, Queen Mary's brother.

Renowned for her beauty, elegance and vivacity, she was for the remainder of her long life one of the most popular and energetic members of the Royal Family.

In 1923 Lord Athlone was appointed Governor General of South Africa and his wife was at his side through some of that country's most turbulent years. When he was appointed Governor General of Canada during the Second World War, Princess Alice won the hearts of Canadians as well.

For many years she was Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and until her death in 1981 at the age of 97 she remained lively and interested in a great variety of social and cultural events.

WELL WRITTEN, INTERESTING GRANDDAUGHTER TO QUEEN VICTORIA
By Tucson Damon
Theo Aronson does know his subjects and Princess Alice, Countless of Athlone, is no exception. There is no question in my mind that yes, he is a fan of hers, but she does come across as an exceptional character in the British Royal Family and a granddaughter that I think Queen Victoria would have been proud of. It's amazing to realize that she was brought up in Queen Victoria's court and lived into the early 1980s. Like Queen Mary, her sister-in-law, she was dedicated and devoted to the Monarchy, and extremely hardworking, along with her husband, The Earl of Athlone (Queen Mary's brother). I found her interesting and the book well researched and written, as I have found Theo Aronson's other books to be.

An Entertaining Look at a Complex Princess
By Deborah A. Wedick-Cooper
This book is well researched and written by Theo Aronson and clearly conveys the sparkle and dash that Princess Alice brought to the royal family. It however, provides very little analysis of her character and her reaction to the stresses on her family that were induced by the first and second world wars. The family dynamic is presented in cardboard fashion and the issues of ideology and hemophilia are glossed over. Her relationship with her daughter May and her opposition to May's choice of husband also gets short shrift. Princess Alice was a complex and interesting woman and deserved better than cardboard and frosting. Theo Aronson writes very well and the book is very entertaining but there is really nothing to sink one's teeth into. Fluffy.
