Inspiring and Challenging

Dr. Gould's book is a much needed book for Christian professors in higher education. There is a stigma in many Christian circles today that academia is an elitist, liberal and anti-God establishment that is at odds with the mission of the church, yet Dr. Gould shows that the university, as a major influence on our society, desperately needs Christian professors that can be used by God "as professors" in reaching the lost and serving the needs of this world. On the surface, this doesn't seem so "outrageous," but as Dr. Gould unfolds his thesis, it becomes more and more apparent what a radical idea this truly is.
Highly recommended for Christians working, or planning to work, in higher education.

Paul Gould not only defends Plantinga's view of Christian scholarship but he also gives great practical tips for how a Christian

The Christian philosophy community is growing in unbelievable ways. With this rapid growth however, there are plenty of Christian philosophers who have strayed away from Plantinga's 'Advice to Christian Philosophers' and who have bought into the myth of needing to leave their religious views at home. In this book, Paul Gould not only defends Plantinga's view of Christian scholarship but he also gives great practical tips for how a Christian professor (of any stripe) should act in and out of the classroom.

Great challenges for current and future Christian professors

Here are three things Gould says which I liked in this book. First, God calls Christian professors to serve Him as professors. This seems outrageous because many have unconsciously accepted the sacred-secular divide, missing the link between academic work and discipleship. Christian professors must see their field through a Christian worldview, be equipped in philosophy and theology and live faithfully for Christ in the academy. We must affirm the calling of Christian professors as professors—individuals who shape the lives and thoughts of future leaders, apply their expertise to the world’s needs, pointing colleagues, administrators and students to Christ.
Second, God calls Christian professors to be a certain kind of people. More than just preaching a gospel of transformation, God calls us to show some evidence of what transformation looks like: “We need to integrate all that we are and do as Christians with all that we are and do as university professors. The gospel is not just something to believe, it is also something to obey,” and “we are after an all-of-life view of discipleship unto Christ, where Christ is Lord of work and play, the sacred and the secular, of faith and scholarship (25).” Being Christlike in character should be the telos of our lives as Christians and scholars. I like this commitment he shares: “I will live or Christ, come what may as a professor. I will find my identity and hope in Christ and point others to Christ through my teaching, relating, and research for the glory of God and the sake of the lost (51).”
Third, God calls Christian professors to put Christ first. Gould encourages us to cultivate the life of the mind and be “intellectually virtuous.” As we enter into conversations in our disciples, which are often dominated by naturalism and postmodernism, we know "faithfulness to Christ in the academy requires the virtue of intellectual courage…there is incredible pressure to sacrifice our Christian integrity in order to maintain academic respectability” (59). This is why we must intentionally put Jesus first in our work, rather than be driven by self-aggrandizement or the pursuit of academic accolades.
The university is a major center of cultural influence. Gould’s work challenges Christian professors and those seeking to work in the academy to see how living a missional life can have a major impact on their students, colleagues and even the world. If you are a current of future Christian professor, this book will give you some great reminders and challenges to help integrate your academic work with your discipleship to Jesus.
