The Paradise Creek Inn is open for business in rural Wilbarger County, Texas. Worth the read with this new bold entry into the mystery book field

We found a fresh new voice in mystery books a few years ago with Reavis Wortham and guess what, we have another powerful new entry. Smithwick-Braden has written a tight, twisting story that doesn't fall into worn cliches. I was surprised page after page with her clean prose and solid storytelling. If you like mysteries, you'll love Death on Paradise Creek. And, I wasn't able to guess the outcome which is always a sign of a good mystery for me.

Long kept secrets begin to unravel in this murder mystery

Based on her debut novel, Death on Paradise Creek, Dianne Smithwick-Braden looks to be a promising new Texas author. Her writing is relaxed and easy to read making for an enjoyable story. What's great about Death on Paradise Creek is that it has multiple elements - mystery, clean romance, history, even natural disasters - and a super-interesting sub-plot that started over a hundred years earlier than the main storyline. Smithwick-Braden expertly weaves the separate storylines together and provides an unexpected and satisfactory ending.
Death on Paradise Creek has a rich cast of characters, and Smithwick-Braden does an outstanding job of fleshing-out each of them. Readers think they have a pretty clear picture, and then the author throws in a detail that muddies what had seemed clear, which makes solving the whodunnit part of the story more difficult.
Though the writing is mostly solid, I think the book could easily be taken to the next level with another pass at editing. There are some punctuation errors, a misplaced modifier or two, and too many extraneous details that didn't add to the story. I would have also preferred less of the play-by-play dialogue and more summarizing of scenes.
Sensitive readers need not worry about any unsavory elements, as there are maybe four swear words (mild), only implied sexual situations, and the violence is not graphic in any way. Death on Paradise Creek is light and lovely.

I haven’t read too many Texas authors who base their novels on our great state. Smithwick-Braden does a fine job of portraying .

I was given this e-book for a fair review.
Outside of a Southwestern Literature class that I took in college, I haven’t read too many Texas authors who base their novels on our great state. Smithwick-Braden does a fine job of portraying her characters as Texans without going hillbilly. While I initially found it hard to immerse myself in the first few chapters (they’re a flashback to the time of saloons and posses), I felt comfortable as the author hit her stride during the present day story. She has an ear for dialogue, which helps flesh out the characters and make them believable. While I thought that the story may have had too many fantastical things happening at once (I don’t read many mysteries, so maybe this is normal), I was eager to read on to see what happened next. Honestly, I think 3 separate (and interesting!) mystery novels could have come out of this single story, but I could see why so many different plot lines and twists were employed to keep the reader from guessing the truth. Or in my case, guessing the truth but doubting my gut feeling every few chapters. If you read this one, feel free to drop me a comment so we can discuss. I look forward to reading the sequel!
