A Beautiful Journey!

Take this saying and hold it in your mind for a bit, if you will: 'If you love something, let it go. If if comes back to you, its yours forever. If it doesn't, then it was never meant to be.' (We will revisit this later).....
When I first started reading Release, I thought it was simply a story about a couple who had lost a child. Far from it. This book tapped into every single one of my emotions. As you would expect, there is heartache. When Mandelyn and Henry lose their little Theodore on leap day, I was devastated and not sure where the story was going. Mandelyn took me on a beautiful journey with her and if the truth be known, she is not alone in her self doubts. Many couples experience what she and Henry had evolved into....a marriage dying out at the fork in the road. Which path do you go on when you feel you've failed as a soul mate and as a parent? And how can you continue if you're not even sure you know yourself anymore? Out of desperation, Mandelyn resorts to something relatively new, called virtual counseling and taps into a pretty creepy world of self discovery with a counselor over the internet. When Henry discovers this, he does what he feels Mandelyn wants...He sets her free. On her quest to finding herself, Mandelyn sought answers by seeking out men from her past. Josuha, Sam and Dante - three men all very different who played significant roles at various times of her life. Mandelyn's journey finally takes us to the land of Sedonia,Arizona and New Mexico, where the book takes on a spiritual turn and I finally came to understand the beautiful redeeming message I believe the author was trying to relay. Not going to give any more spoilers, but just remember the first sentence I wrote in my review above...

Contemporary Fiction at its Best

When I was offered a review copy of this novel, I hesitated for a while, but only because I had so many reviews that I'd committed to. As it is, I waited longer than I meant to before posting it. This is in no way a reflection of Hope Russell Nunki's fantastic novel.
From the first scene, where Mandelyn comes home to find her husband Henry confronting her with information about her files, through the next chapter, where we learn about their stillborn son, four years earlier, through the rest of the novel, the author writes with a clear voice, in first person (which can often be tricky). We feel her protagonist's pain even when we sympathize with Harry...and we want to see her life improve.
What follows is a journey through pain and loss to self-awareness, and eventually self-fulfillment. The pitch I received described this novel as both 'poignant' and 'hilarious' and both are equally true. This is contemporary women's fiction at its best: full of characters that sound real, emotions that ring true, and situations that may be somewhat heightened versions of reality, but never lack plausibility.
It's a gripping debut novel, a compelling read, and one I highly recommend. As well, I look forward to what Hope Russell Nunki creates next (no pressure.)

This may sound like a rather ordinary novel

A well-written, thought-provoking novel that will keep your book club talking!
On the surface, Release is the story of a woman whose life falls apart after a tragic miscarriage, and her attempts to put it all back together again. This may sound like a rather ordinary novel, but Release is far from ordinary. Nunki weaves her story through an extraordinarily rich tapestry of settings, characters, and concepts, some completely foreign to me, making the novel very captivating. While a few have commented that they felt like they were being educated or lectured to, I found the depth and obscurity of some things in the novel fascinating and enjoyed the cultural enrichment it provided. Nunki’s characters are varied and complex so readers are sure to relate to them on some level. The novel is deep and thought-provoking with plenty of topics for book club discussions. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!
