About the Author
Lewis MacLeod has lived a multifaceted life as an outdoorsman, natural resource specialist, military intelligence analyst, computer software engineer, educator and author. His interests in societal diversity and folkways are insatiable, and have led him to attempt mastery of a diversity of global languages, including such challenging tongues as Irish Gaelic, Arabic, and Hawaiian. His current residence is in the beautiful State of Oregon. Miss Mai is Lewis MacLeod’s fifth novel-length work.

A Memoir From the Heart

Mr. MacLeod has crafted a funny, sad, insightful coming-of-age memoir that moves gracefully from the lusts of adolescence to the birth of love in a young adult. With self-effacing candor, he describes his journey from high school to university to Viet Nam and back with humor and pathos. The only combat in these pages is the combat of the mind and the heart as a young man faces his ignorance and prejudice and learns "to turn the map over and see things from the other side", finally challenging "all he knows that really ain't so." MacLeod's love of words and language shines through, from the awkward self-consciousness of the adolescent to the man's attempt to communicate what is truest in his heart. Ultimately, it is a book about integrity. Even reading it a second time, I wept. I can only hope that an enterprising screenwriter finds this manuscript and makes of it the film it deserves to be.

Stronger Second Half

I read the reviews and thought I would download and read for myself. I was glad I did. It was an interesting book for me. The first half of the book covers the time in high school and college and post college, marriage and then drafted, boot camp, etc. The second had really gets into the essence of the book and introduces us to Miss Mai. The second half was of more interest to me. I would score the first half as about average a 3 star but the last half a 5 star (average 4 here). The second half was hard put down and moved quickly to conclusion....which I will not spoil here. It had much more "heart" and feeling and the author spun the tale so that I felt I was there.

A Beautiful Story

This is a hard book to put down. It reads like a memoir, a story of the emotions of life and love, starting with the exploratory and conflicting passions of adolescence, then young maturity and marriage and Draft Boards and Viet Nam. The reader has been alerted from the first that here is where the love story reaches a climax.
The story is fascinating because Mr. MacLeod makes it so. He is a virtuoso with words, writing with grace and wit, clarity and passion. He is a master of depicting emotions and moods. And it is an interesting story in itself. A very good book.
