For the Suburban DIY-er? Not sure, but good either way.

First, I also own Making Stuff and Doing Things another DIY instruction book that I've seen some people couple with How and Why. That one was more punk oriented, not touching too much on cleanliness or kid-friendly activities (not that I minded) and was composed of some handwritten, some typewritten, and some photocopied articles by a bunch of different authors. This one is much less messy, more streamlined, and more family related (think punk-hippie-outcast types with children trying to be domestic in their own way), with actual photographs and the majority of articles in neat (what I am guessing is) Times New Roman. The sections are Bicycles, Home and Garage, Gardening, Educating Your Children, Musical Instruments, and Everything Else. These projects are for people with permanent, or at least semi-permanent dwellings for the most part, unless you have come up with a way to plant a garden in your backpack...Overall I like it, lots of information.

Interesting book, but set in the tiniest print I've ever seen.

Because the print on this book is so small, I will be forced to get stronger reading glasses to continue reading it. In addition, the photographs are in black and white and the quality is poor. I can't really say too much yet, but what I did manage to read is creative and educational. For the most part this is a charming account of a do-it-yourself lifestyle. I admire the author's commitment to recycling, up-cycling and repurposing.

Wonderful book with good ideas for DIY types

This book is well thought out for thrifty minded diy types. While most of what I review is craft and cookbooks, this one is more practical. Less about crafts, and more about lifestyle do it yourself. It's based on punk DIY ethics, and honestly reads like some of the better self-published chapbooks my hippie mom had. It is easy to read and well-formatted.
A lot of the bigger projects do call for welding experience. So if you can't weld, you may need help from someone who can. The ideas are just brilliant, projects like building a bicycle cart using old bed frames. As an Alaskan, I appreciated the part about adapting bicycles for riding in the winter with really good practical tips.
This is a book on salvaging, re-purposing and living inexpensively. The ideas include tips on getting a loan for home, making musical instruments and playing just for the fun of it, and homeschooling in a way that encourages imagination. The instructions are well written, and easily adaptable to the materials you may have on hand. There are also tips on getting some of those materials for free. I know that I've been able to call my local bicycle repair shop and get bags of damaged tire inner tubes for free, and those are used in some places in this book.
I'll re-read it, and loan it to friends and family. It's one of the more accessible zine type books I've gotten in terms of appeal to a broader audience.
