Don’t lose your job over it

The skill of an author is evidenced by the detail and the reality of the pictures he paints with the words he uses. Max Power is a skilled writer to say the least.

There are some gory bits as you would expect in a book titled Bad Blood, but it's not gore for the sake of gore. This is the second book by Max Power that I've read and I'm happy to say he keeps getting better.

At just over 500 pages, you’ll need to set a bit of time aside to read this one. 5 stars all the way!

Step out of your comfort zone into the dark world of Bad Blood

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Max Power's debut novel `Darkly Wood' I guessed I was in for a treat with `Bad Blood'. The storyline intrigued me and was the reason I chose this to read next, even before embarking on `Larry Flynn', his second novel to be released on kindle. I could see that `Bad Blood' had all the right ingredients to guarantee my interest: death, family secrets, past demons to be confronted, a tangled web of motivations, a priest possibly fallen from grace... I also guessed - correctly, as it turned out - that the looming hurricane might well turn out to be a metaphor for the horrific storm of events about to be recorded.

As I began reading I was all the way into Chapter Three before emerging blinking from the mesmerising narrative that continued to enthral me all the way through to the end. Max Power has a real skill for creating atmosphere and allowing a mystery to unfold at its own pace, dropping clues and hints for the discerning reader to gather as they go. Right from the start we are tantalised by the complex character of James... Why has he chosen not to speak since the inadvertent killing that led to his incarceration? Why was he intent on murdering the victim who ironically escaped death yet now lies in a coma? Is he a bad man who deserves to be on death row, or a good man who has committed dark deeds in order to avenge some as yet undisclosed wrong? And just what are the apparently supernatural or psychologically mesmeric arts he practices that befuddle the minds of those who come into contact with him?

The lawyer, Carol, struggles to recall everything that occurred between them in their first meeting, yet feels strangely driven to help him. The priest, Father Martin Doyle, doesn't know who James is initially, but discovers they have far more in common than he realises, connected with his own well hidden past. "James has an uncanny ability to manipulate people," he says at one point. This is something of an understatement...His fellow inmates on death row see James as an apparently weak man, who when attacked instantly transforms before their eyes into a menacing force to be reckoned with. Is he a skilled conjurer, a master of misdirection, or some kind of sorcerer? We are left guessing for quite a while as we watch dismayed from the sidelines as the story continues apace.

Meanwhile the prison officer Elias Wainwright is an evil, sadistic personality with an agenda all too horribly his own and absolutely no redeeming qualities. Max Power doesn't hold back from describing the levels of depravity to which human beings can sink and the disturbing, often sickening nature of evil. He is a gifted storyteller as well as an accomplished inventor of characters who become vividly alive in the reader's mind. Although some aspects of the narrative took me way out of my comfort zone, I also found myself unexpectedly touched at times by the predicament in which some characters struggled - particularly in the story of young Jamal, who has an ambivalent relationship with Father Doyle and a tragic history of his own.

When Jamal's path eventually crosses that of Elias there are descriptions of unbearable torture and violence, though this is never gratuitous but always in the context of the narrative. Max Power manages to keep deftly juggling these various strands as the story progresses, never leaving us too long without at least some answers, and yet never giving away too much in one go. I won't reveal any more of the story, because the compelling reading has much to do in uncovering the mystery that lies at its heart. But I will say I thoroughly recommend it for its many attributes. If you are looking for a character led and often shocking thriller with an initial slow burn that ultimately scorches your imagination, you will be as satisfied as I was by this enthralling 5* read.

Another fantastic book of Max Power.

A young lawyer named Carol visits James, a man on death row. He admits that he has a secret which he cannot share with her because it appears so surreal that she would not believe him anyway. Yet not much later she has to go through such awful events herself that the terrible crime James was sentenced for starts to look like a petty offense in comparison. While some bloodsheds Carol witnesses seem to be totally unrelated to James, she is also slowly uncovering parts of something big and horrible that has been going on for ages.

“Bad Blood” is a story about being from a really bad family. When your father or grandfather is a serial killer, the fact that you grew up without him may not always help you.

Max Power is an excellent storyteller. I have also read his “Darkly Wood”, which was much more lyrical and somewhat softer than this book. Both books are great in my opinion, just different. What I really liked about “Bad Blood” was the author’s masterful account of interaction among people from completely different backgrounds. While the extreme situations that actually brought them together are indeed somewhat surreal, the characters are believable, easy to imagine. A black teenager really speaks and acts like a black teenager while an Irish priest is equally realistic. I do not see anything stereotypical in these characters though, because they will all surprise you in so many ways.There is a prison guard who is much worse than most inmates, a lawyer who turns out to be quite irrationally mistrustful of the law etc.

The book is packed with many gory scenes that will send chills down your spine. Some characters you may start to like won’t make it till the end of the story. The amount of torture in this book may be too much for more sensitive readers (which is the case with many great books) but it is there for a reason.

Although there are more than a couple of psychos in this book, many characters appear to be quite normal, almost typical examples of their profession and nationality. It is fascinating when Max Power puts these ordinary people into such extraordinary circumstances. Not only do they have a chance to reveal their true nature, but perhaps they even develop and change to a great extent. The evil world described here is a testing ground where a coward finally builds courage, a lawyer becomes somewhat close to a gang leader, and so many other fantastic things happen. People drive around and climb buildings in a hurricane and the whole book is just one big adventure no one would like to live but many will enjoy to read about.

They just keep getting better.

I’m now 11 books into Kennedy’s James Acton series and I’m ready for more. These characters just improve with each novel. Kennedy’s ability to weave a story from the past with current day is exemplary.
This story takes place in Vietnam. I wasn’t sure how I’d like it since, as a young adult, I spent so much time and effort avoiding joining my friends there on behalf of the us government. I enjoyed the story immensely and reconfirmed that it’s still not on my travel list. There’s plenty of action as the past weaves into the present.

This book can be read without having read the previous ten novels as it’s a good stand alone story. Then you’ll want to read from the beginning of the series to see how the characters were introduced and evolved through time. It’s much better than ‘binge watching’ some Netflix series. :-)

Russian Roulette Diplomacy

I love the way Kennedy weaves a story using ancient history and current events. The death of the Buddha forces people to seek safety in a new land now called Vietnam only to have their descendants slaughtered centuries later in a brutal war. The Actons find themselves accused of aiding a member of the Delta Force in the assassination of the Russian Prime Minister while visiting a Hanoi museum, the Russians' zeal for “justice” putting the world on the edge of war. Lots of action and of course a lesson from the past that applies to today's world. Highly recommended.

Another well written, descriptive, blend of history and current events drive this fast paced, action packed Acton adventure. James and Laura come to the aid of the Delta boys for a change, helping clear Niner's name and defuse an international crisis. I like how Kennedy develops all of the characters in his books. Looking forward to whatever comes next.

Wonderful Love Story

A very sweet a touching love story that I enjoyed reading. It was a pleasure having characters come into my life that wanted to know more about and understand what made them tick. Well written and told from two very different, yet realist, points of view. I hope there is a follow up novel, I'd like to follow these characters into the next phase of their lives. AND the book got me to try Wen which I love!! Great first book! Look forward to more!!

Concise guide on training your dog

I have a pet chihuahua. I have had the worst time trying to get him housebroken. He realizes what we want him to do, it just seems that he decides to be stubborn sometimes. I have been following the methods outlined in chapter five. I have already noticed a difference. He is not perfect yet, but I see improvement, and he seems to be realizing how important it is to only potty outside. If you have any problems with your pet dog than I would recommend that you read this book. The information was presented in an easy to understand manner, and I think it is going to be a big help to me.

very informative, lots to take away and incorporate

I learned some key techniques that I've never look at in-depth before. The most important method was 'clicking,' which lets the dog know he did something good. It brings the connection between the action and reward. I remember my friend used it one time but I didn't care enough to ask about it.

And basically just the emphasis of reinforcements versus punishment is further reinforced in me.

There's actually a lot more information in this book than I participated and it's surely worth the price, I recommend any dog owner with novice dog training abilities to benefit by checking this book out.

Good basic dog training book

Good basic dog training book. I like how the book teaches you how to train your dog with commands while you stand side by side. Most dog training I see focuses on standing in front of your dog. I think the dog can maybe understand better when you are by it's side doing the action. It was good to learn more about clicker training. I've got 2 large dogs that I feel would benefit from that type of training.

Disappointing.

Very basic, written for some one that wants to get an idea of what's involved in training a dog to do detection work. Not a very good resource for actually training detection dogs. If your looking for a book on actually training a passive alert detection dog, this book is not that.

Hunting A Psychopath chronicles the on-going search for the identity of the serial rapist and murderer known both as the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker. The EAR/ONS first surfaced in June,1976,in Sacramento, CA. He was last heard from in May, 1986,in Irvine, CA, where he brutally murdered an eighteen year old woman. In between those years he stayed busy, assaulting fifty-three people, and murdering twelve more, while spreading a blanket of fear across central CA and parts of Southern CA. It has been over thirty-years now,and still he has not been brought to justice.

Although there have been other unsolved crimes of this same nature and of even greater magnitude, this series seems to have had a lasting impact on the public -- enough so that a virtual army of private citizens are pursuing this investigation on their own. When time permits, there are full time police officers who also work this investigation.

By examining the information from each assault, it gradually becomes clear just how meticulous the EAR/ONS was. Every detail, from selecting a victim, to the actual assault, appear to have been carefully planned and orchestrated. The EAR/ONS was as devoted to committing sexual assaults and murders as anyone devoted to their own profession. In a distorted way, he was a professional rapist / murderer, and quite probably a certifiable psychopath.

Perhaps this continuing interest is because those wanting to involve themselves in the investigation know it can still be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

"Hunting a Psychopath" is a fascinating first hand account of the crimes of California's East Area Rapist Original Night Stalker couples killer. Detective Shelby was the first Sacramento detective to make a connection between a series of rapes that began in the middle class communities of East Sacramento in the late 1970's. His book details the efforts to apprehend this psychopath before he transformed into a southern California serial killer who preyed upon middle class couples through a terrifying series of home invasion murders. I highly recommend this book for readers of true crime. This particular series of crimes remains unsolved, leaving many questions about a violent predator who has been labeled one of the most brazen criminals and one of the least publicized. Detective Shelby's book is fast paced and full of investigation details.. . . well done.

Student's of the case will absolutely love the book

This is a must read for anyone interested in the East Area Rapist-Original Nightstalker-Golden State Killer. Yes folks this UNSUB has three names and you would think that people would know at least one of them.....but people don't. This creep is the most prolific unapprehended serial offender in California state history. The most important thing about Shelby's book is that it was written at all....people need to learn and read more about the EAR/ONS/GSK. Shelby's book has a lot of information in it about the attacks from his experience as an investigator on the case. Student's of the case will absolutely love the book. It is not perfect by any stretch but it is a must read for student's of the case.

Detailed Account of the Notorious East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker Case

I have to say, living on the East coast, I was unfamiliar with this string of brutal rapes and murders when the author, retired police Lieutenant Richard Shelby, asked me to read the galleys of this book. The detail that Detective Shelby presents of each of the cases he investigated is conveyed in a compelling, forthright manner and he takes the reader along 'with' him on the investigations. Since these crimes are still unsolved--although there are certainly prime suspects--it is the hope that the information provided might yet jog a memory of someone who might know something or provide a link that will help definitively solve these crimes and put the psychopathic perpetrator away (if he is still alive, as is quite likely) for good. Shelby was the original investigator of the first crime in this string. Subsequent vicious rapes in the Sacramento and surrounding areas, that got more frequent and brutal until the perpetrator ventured into murder, were investigated by Detective Shelby and his partners and it quickly became apparent to him that this was a serial string of crimes.

The book reads as almost a crime novel, with wry notations and insights into police work in the 1970's-1990's and how it has evolved over the years.

I am baffled at one reviewer's complaints about 'thousands' (??) of typographical errors. Aside from the fact that the first edition was pulled for some minor corrections that had been an oversight, the editions now have been corrected and errors of that sort are quite minimal.

This is an intriguing inside look at true life crime. Definitely an interesting compilation of the details of the cases and how they are connected.

Mark Sava, former CIA station chief of Azerbaijan, investigates the death of his first boss and discovers a secret with devastating global implications at the crossroads of his past and the present.

Mark Sava has married his former colleague and girlfriend, Daria Buckingham, and the two are enjoying a peaceful life with their young daughter, as much as that is possible for the owner of a spies for hire business in Central Asia. When one of his employees dies of an apparent heart attack, Sava feels compelled to investigate, for this is no ordinary hire. The deceased is the man who recruited Sava into the CIA and changed the trajectory of his life forever. Then, a mysterious painting at the scene of the employee’s death catapults Sava back in time and forces him to reconcile his past with the developments around him. Soon he is embroiled in a game of global misdirection, where the stakes are far higher than one man’s death.

Mr. Mayland is a certified master of credible espionage. WELL WORTH THE WAIT !!

This book is like a giant piece of birthday cake that you have been waiting for all year. When you finally get it, you don't know whether to gobble it down, or look at it for a while and then savor it slowly. Well I couldn't wait and I read it in one long, intense sitting and enjoyed every minute of it. This series is only getting better as the new books come out. I particularly enjoyed reading some of Sava's back story and learning more about what shaped him into the person he is today.

I used the maps provided frequently and logged on to Mr. Mayland's website to see the photographs he posted. I viewed them once before starting the book, and again when I finished. I would urge anyone reading this book to do the same. I think it is incredibly interesting that his books are set in the areas he has chosen because they are quite unknown to many American readers and to me they are very exotic. I supposed that is why the photos brought the story to life the way they did because I had no pictures in my head.

I think Mr. Mayland is an extremely talented writer and deserves to be right up there with the big name authors. I think he is better than some of them who have been around for a long time and have gotten "stale". I think he is very good to his readers by providing maps, character lists, photographs, and explanations of abbreviations and lingo used by the military and others. I would cheer to see his books in wide publication in the U.S. and would love to see a stack of them at the front door of Barnes and Noble. Keep up the good work Mr. Mayland. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book, along with the maps, photos, and stories that go along with them. Thanks for the good work.

Just OK for me...

"Death of a Spy" by Dan Mayland has an excellent storyline but the first two thirds of the story are a bit slow and tedious. The last third is an action packed shoot em' up romp that almost makes up for the slow start. I'm not crazy about the writing style but overall I found the story entertaining other than the early pacing issues. Some of the fans of the mystery/thriller genre will enjoy this story. 3 stars!!!

Kate Redman's a girl I can relate to

I thoroughly enjoyed the three books in this set. Easy to read with well-developed and likeable characters. The plots kept you interested from start to finish and the reader isn't bogged down with too much of the gory details of the murders.
Would love another three to follow now!

Celina Grace's Kate Redman series is a new find for me -- happily so. Redman is a detective sergeant and the plot lines center around murder cases, but there is a great deal more to Kate. As the books progress, we learn about her background, family, and her co-workers, all of which are carefully drawn and meaningful to the underlying stories. In addition to Kate herself, we meet and get to know her siblings -- all of whom figure in the plot, either directly or peripherally. In the interest of avoiding spoilers, I'll just say that her relationships with the other police officers develop with each additional book, richly so. Each change or revelation means something in terms of the overall secondary story, and sometimes with respect to the murder inquiry. Highly recommended!

Ok but predictable.

Decent character development although I wanted to slap some sense into Kate a few times. Didn't like the internal monologue or the diary device. In all three of these novels I thought the solution was obvious about a quarter of the way in. I may give this author another try and hope for some growth.

Highly entertaining -- obituaries? Yep.

I never dreamed that a book of obituaries could be so entertaining. It's surprising that a death could be an occasion for wit, but even more so that the obituaries should at the same time be so respectful. The only time my interest flagged -- badly -- was in the piece about a great cricket player. But then, the book is for everybody. All but one of the obituaries are recent, the exception being Winston Churchill. And that one is superb. Many of the people profiled here are unfamiliar to me, but no matter. They're all worth recording. I have read one of these over and over, that of one Jade Goody. She was a lower-class reality show 'star' of such overweening vulgarity that I was reduced to tears of laughter -- more than once. She almost makes me grateful that even Britain can produce someone as appalling as our own Sarah Palin.

This is a simply marvellous, highly readable book. The obituries are uniformly well written, with a delightful, very British, dry sense of humour. The persons featured vary from the great to the notorious, the eccentric to the obscure. Being broken down into generally short articles, this book can be sampled lovingly in small or large doses. Each time I open it, it never fails to inform and amuse.
