John D. Alexander has been rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Providence, Rhode Island, since 2000. He previously served parishes in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and Staten Island, New York. He currently serves as superior of the American Region of the Society of Mary, an international devotional society in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

These pithy meditations on the weekday lectionary will be equally valuable to preachers looking to delve more deeply into the appointed scriptural readings and laity wishing to enrich their experience of these seasons of the Church year. John Alexander goes to the heart of the message. He puts it in the context of its period, but also brings in a wealth of other relevant references. His style is straightforward and lucid. This is a great little book to have on the kitchen table or anywhere you might pass and stop to read for a few minutes each day of Advent. It's accessible, insightful, and instructive. So much of our time and minds are preoccupied with Christmas preparations, while in fact, a bit of holy reading and meditation, is the best Christmas preparation of all. It also encourages delving into scripture to further understand our anticipation for the Lord's coming.
