Mark Sava is thrown into the fight of his life when an unresolved Cold War mystery involving his first love collides with a present-day Russia on the march.
Life has never been better for Mark Sava, the former CIA station chief of Azerbaijan. He's recently married, has a newborn daughter, and the launch of his spies-for-hire business in Central Asia has been a great success. Then he gets a call from the US Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia--one his employees, seventy-two-year-old Larry Bowlan, has died of a heart attack.
Bowlan was also Sava's first boss at the CIA, so Sava feels a responsibility to personally recover the remains of his friend. He hops on a flight to Tbilisi, visits the hotel room in which Bowlan died, and is shocked when he discovers an oil painting that depicts a woman he knows all too well...
So begins four of the most violent and blisteringly personal days of Sava's life as he struggles to protect his future, and the future of a country he loves, by fighting demons from his past.

Review
Praise for Dan Mayland:
"Mayland's insight into Central Asian espionage and his ability to craft a breathless thriller are exceeded only by his understanding of the human heart."
--Orest Stelmach, author of The Boy from Reactor 4
"Mayland beautifully captures the high stakes games played in an increasingly complex world."
--Kyle Mills, New York Times bestselling author of The Immortalists
"Dan Mayland has an excellent understanding of modern Iran."
--Gene Garthwaite, author of The Persians
Praise for The Colonel's Mistake:
"Author Mayland handles this debut novel (and first of a series) with the aplomb of a veteran. He makes oil-rich, little-known Azerbaijan a fascinating locale for the "latest incarnation of the Great Game." Sava's transformation from complacent professor to hard-edged, combative spook is skillfully handled, and the explication of Azerbaijan's importance in the geopolitics of oil recalls the knowing thrillers of David Ignatius. There's also plenty of action, and a violent denouement. Espionage-thriller fans won't want to miss this one."
--Booklist
"An outstanding debut...The Colonel's Mistake has a fresh setting well off the beaten path of the run of the mill intelligence novel, and you'll definitely be rewarded for making the trip..."
--William Christie, author of The Warriors of God
"Dan Mayland tells a riveting spy story from the Caspian oil city of Baku. He vividly captures the mysterious, dangerous place that swarms with agents like Cold War Berlin in the 1960s."
--Lutz Kleveman, author of The New Great Game: Blood and Oil in Central Asia

The Master of Credible Espionage
By Orest B. Stelmach
Mark Sava, former CIA station chief of Azerbaijan, investigates the death of his first boss and discovers a secret with devastating global implications at the crossroads of his past and the present.
Mark Sava has married his former colleague and girlfriend, Daria Buckingham, and the two are enjoying a peaceful life with their young daughter, as much as that is possible for the owner of a spies for hire business in Central Asia. When one of his employees dies of an apparent heart attack, Sava feels compelled to investigate, for this is no ordinary hire. The deceased is the man who recruited Sava into the CIA and changed the trajectory of his life forever. Then, a mysterious painting at the scene of the employee’s death catapults Sava back in time and forces him to reconcile his past with the developments around him. Soon he is embroiled in a game of global misdirection, where the stakes are far higher than one man’s death.
Mr. Mayland is a certified master of credible espionage. While his biography makes mention of his travels and adventures in the Central Asian locations depicted in this and his prior books, there is no mention of any past employment in the foreign service. It is hard to believe. Death of a Spy features his trademark expertise in European and Asian geopolitics, regional conflicts, military strategies, and tradecraft. It is an instantly transportive piece of fiction that places the reader firmly in a relatively unknown and often misunderstood region of the world.
This installment of the Sava series features fascinating revelations concerning the protagonist’s background. At its core is a mysterious painting which hooks the reader from the story’s outset. What happened to its artist and why is she so important to Sava? The novel’s pacing reflects the plot’s credible nature. Sava’s careful investigation precedes the discovery of a powder keg which ultimately explodes and leads to a rich and satisfying conclusion ripped from today’s headlines.
Verdict: Death of a Spy gives birth to the most satisfying Sava adventure yet.

WELL WORTH THE WAIT !!
By Patricia Duhon
This book is like a giant piece of birthday cake that you have been waiting for all year. When you finally get it, you don't know whether to gobble it down, or look at it for a while and then savor it slowly. Well I couldn't wait and I read it in one long, intense sitting and enjoyed every minute of it. This series is only getting better as the new books come out. I particularly enjoyed reading some of Sava's back story and learning more about what shaped him into the person he is today.
I used the maps provided frequently and logged on to Mr. Mayland's website to see the photographs he posted. I viewed them once before starting the book, and again when I finished. I would urge anyone reading this book to do the same. I think it is incredibly interesting that his books are set in the areas he has chosen because they are quite unknown to many American readers and to me they are very exotic. I supposed that is why the photos brought the story to life the way they did because I had no pictures in my head.
I think Mr. Mayland is an extremely talented writer and deserves to be right up there with the big name authors. I think he is better than some of them who have been around for a long time and have gotten "stale". I think he is very good to his readers by providing maps, character lists, photographs, and explanations of abbreviations and lingo used by the military and others. I would cheer to see his books in wide publication in the U.S. and would love to see a stack of them at the front door of Barnes and Noble. Keep up the good work Mr. Mayland. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book, along with the maps, photos, and stories that go along with them. Thanks for the good work.

Just OK for me...
By Dave H
"Death of a Spy" by Dan Mayland has an excellent storyline but the first two thirds of the story are a bit slow and tedious. The last third is an action packed shoot em' up romp that almost makes up for the slow start. I'm not crazy about the writing style but overall I found the story entertaining other than the early pacing issues. Some of the fans of the mystery/thriller genre will enjoy this story. 3 stars!!!
