Heroine not strong at all

Holly has worked in her father's floral shop since she was fifteen. Low pay, six days a week, no partnership in the business. She has been doing this for eleven years and she wants to say her stepmother is the villain? What about the nine years she put in before her father died - he seems just as much to blame! Is Holly just plain stupid? I hate when there is just total "roll over and die" attitude in a woman. She should just gotten on with her life WAY before this! But then there would be no story!

Our hero, Richard, a rather egotistical millionaire figures all women are gold diggers including his cheating (now dead) wife and has that theory confirmed by the women he dates from the matchmaker "Wives Wanted." An interesting concept, this unique dating service matches wealthy men with attractive sophisticated women with marriages of convenience in mind. I'm not sure what he expected ... but .... then Richard meets pitiful Holly who happens to be friends with his widowed mother. A couple of fancy dates, fantastic sex and the threat of losing her livelihood by the selling of the flower shop leads Holly to say YES to his marriage proposal. And later HE gets angry cause she is marrying him for his money??? Oh please!!!

OK for a quick read. This is the first of a trilogy. You meet the two other men and one is already married to his "bought wife" even though his story is the second one. It is ok but I wish Holly had been stronger and Richard less manipulative. Judged against similar books, it holds its own. Oh, I forgot -- of course there is a pregnancy at the end -- my sympathetic morning sickness is returning again.

one of Lee's better romances

Bought: One Bride is the first book in the Wives Wanted series by Australian author, Miranda Lee. Richard Crawford has been widowed 18 months and feels it's time to find a wife who'll give him children. He doesn't need love: the autopsy on his wife taught him his love for her was wasted, so he goes to Wives Wanted for a mate. Holly Greenaway's life has been miserable since her father died; it gets even worse when her greedy stepmother decides to sell her father's florist shop, the only thing Holly really wanted from her father. A chance meeting between Holly and Richard soon has Richard pursuing Holly: she's the perfect candidate for marriage, definitely not the gold-digger that the other women he has dated seem to be. But Holly wants to marry for love. Richard takes a step that puts Holly in his arms, but will he tell her the truth? This delightful romance has likeable characters, snappy dialogue and a classic plot. Characters from the previous Wives Wanted novels make appearances in this one. One of Lee's better romances.

Solid 4 stars

This is an above-average read. Not Miranda's best, but still one of her better ones. Neither of the MCs was perfect; as was pointed out by other reviewers Richard can be manipulative and overly stubborn and Holly isn't a particularly strong person, but in some way I think that adds to the charm. I'm kind of tired of the MCs who are all flawed in the same ways. The thing is that both of the characters realize that they have these flaws and they make the story and the progression of the relationship seem more real. The ending felt a little rushed, but overall it was a solid 4 stars and I can see myself reading it again.

Adventures of the man who invented the modern canoe

This is a highly readable account of the author's solo voyage across the English Channel to France and up the Seine. Although he sails in a small sailboat here, MacGregor invented the modern canoe, and spent his life promoting the canoe and other outdoor sports. This is a fun book, especially for small boat sailors

Inadequacies

This book had two main problems.
Firstly, the original page numbers were repeated in the text in three different formats: a straight number, a phrase such as 'page 23', and both of these enclosed in brackets.
The lack of cosistency I found very distracting.
Secondly, none of the original illustrations were included. The text refers to various illustrations to explain the author's descriptions but none of them have appeared in this electronic version. You had to follow the description of the boat layout and its style very closely and still had little idea as to what the boat looked like.

Gr 9 Up—Best friends Sumika and Ushio have hidden feelings for each other, and because neither wishes to risk their bond, a rift forms between them. At first, Ushio is oblivious to her heart's desire, and Sumika is unwilling to reveal her own feelings, but with new friends complicating their daily lives, they are forced to reevaluate themselves. Gradually, their revelations, coupled with genuine bonding moments, bring them much closer. Character forms morph frequently to visually match the tone of the situation; poignant moments are shaded and highlighted in comparison to the normal gently cute mode, while comedic scenes are simplified and exaggerated. By keeping such elements as happiness and sadness, tension and lightness balanced, the author delivers a well-rounded emotional experience. A few hiccups in the text do not detract from the work. This shoujo-ai (light girls love) is a pure-hearted romance with minimal fanservice that establishes itself as a female friendly environment. Through both characters eyes, readers can feel the affection they have for each other and hope that their feelings can bridge the gap between them. The Good and The Bad

The good is the manga itself; that's reviewed below. The bad has to do with this edition, and I'll discuss the problems with that now.

The Bad
1) The book title and picture are not what you get; you get a manga clearly marked as volume one, and indeed what is on sale here is Part One only (Chapters 1-18). The manga published in Japan has 53 chapters, so at this rate we could see as many as two additional volumes.

2) Amazon's description states, "Both of them prefer girls, but Ushio likes cute and petite types while Sumika prefers the athletic outgoing girls." This is wrong; Sumika is interested only and always in Ushio.

3) The translation feels a bit weird to me. For example, on page 3, Sumika says, "Here we go again". The actual Japanese is very close to the scanlated version: "Is this your illness starting up again?" The first version makes sense; it isn't wrong -- but why? In later sections, the translation actually corrupts the text so badly that some of the jokes don't even make sense. Why?

The Good
Whispered Words is the story of high school girl Kazama Ushio and her best friend Murasame Sumika. Ushio crushes on cute girls and is very out. Sumika is tall, athletic, a born leader -- and secretly in love with Ushio. The tension is that she believes she isn't cute enough to be loved in turn. The first two volumes of the series chronicle Ushio's mad rush to find a cutie, with Sumika following close behind, desperate to keep her own crush hidden. Ikeda-kun is excellent at comedy: there's situations wild and silly, sharp comic dialog, and the comic energy makes it all hold together. I found it engaging and a lot of fun.

Light spoilers follow; be warned.

Things change completely in volume three; Sumika shatters under the weight of her deceptions. Ikeda takes us through the back story: who the girls are and what secrets drive their personalities. We learn Ushio's true feelings, and the weight of her lies to keep them hidden. In the following volumes Sumika and Ushio put themselves back together, as whole, mature people -- who are open about their deep love for each other. This part of the series I found engaging, touching and real, with sadness and loss, but also joy.
Your mileage may vary; some will describe the series as "aaangst!"

A comparison with Milk Moringa's Girlfriends is useful; both feature high school girls afraid that revealing their secret desires will mean rejection and loss. But the two manga are not only different, but are different kinds of things.

Girlfriends is detailed, largely realistically drawn, and one feels completely immersed in the world of affluent high school girls. Morinaga uses this world as a mirror held up to the girls: in watching their friends, they understand their own feelings and what to do with them. Girlfriends is a well-crafted, subtly constructed manga. Yet at the same time, the plotting feels conventional, staged, and the manga is basically fluffy. I happen to like good fluff, for the same reasons I like comfort food, and Girlfriends is first rate comfort food. Unlike Whispered Words, Girlfriends has a hefty chunk of service thrown in, but in the end what one appreciates here is craftsmanship.

Whispered Words is much sharper; the girls face risk and loss; the series shows some of the real challenges for gay teens in Japan. The comic elements do continue: though the secondary characters never take on the three dimensional quality they do in Girlfriends, they provide most of the comic energy in the later volumes.

An important difference between the manga is that Takashi Ikeda is a man, and cannot give as rich a portrayal of an adolescent girl's life or of lesbian love as can Milk Morinaga. Whispered Words also has the feel of looking back on the angst of love and loss from an older, wiser view. While the drawing seldom reaches the lush portrayals in Girlfriends, several panels have stunning emotional impact, the kind that Girlfriends lacks. While Girlfriends comforts me, Whispered Words touches me on deeper emotional and intellectual levels.

Both are superb manga, each of their kind.

Great manga, Terrible product.

I think people are over-rating this for the wrong reason. Sasameki Koto is a wonderful manga and a wonderful anime, but this product is awful and it's an insult to all fans and to the people who produced the original Japanese version.

It's riddled with simple spelling errors, like typing "stans" instead of "fans".

The text placement is sloppy. In the first half of the book, the main issue is that the text is placed too high in each speech bubble. Since english is written left to right while japanese is written top to bottom, the text bubbles are shaped in a way that is hard to place the english words. However, they did an exceptionally bad job, pushing the words as far to the top of each bubble as possible. In the latter half of the book, the words actually go out of the speech bubbles. This corrupts the text AND the pictures behind it.

They essentially only use one font throughout the book, the generic manga text font, regardless of what kind of mood the words have. They even use the generic manga font for translated words on signs or text on cellphones. This issue is fairly minor, but it's still something that would have been covered by a skilled editor.

Finally, they constantly split words in half when they could have fit them onto one line. They do so 1-3 times on every single page of the book, and it's ridiculous. Some spots are almost unreadable.

All of these problems WILL tear you out of your immersion while reading, and it's disgusting to know that One Peace Books thought they could produce it with such a sloppy editorial job. It genuinely looks like they didn't even have an editor work on it before production.

My advice: Postpone your purchase of this product. They might release a revised edition later, if all the complaints get to them.

One of the best Yuri themed manga

Sasameki Koto (Whispered Words) is one of the sweetest and funny yuri mangas ever written, with lovely characters a good dosis of drama but with all the feeling of the first love.

Since the original manga is over 50 chapters I guess we'll be having two more volumes. The paper is a little bit thin for my taste but overall is good, the translation is also good although a couple of sentences are weird but nothing extremely awkward.

I'll be buying the rest definitively!

No way.

Why is third book there? Who is buying this? Who did this? WHO? I ask you. I'll tell you what one of his brothers Gottfried wrote. See the critic "Snowman" that this book is evaluated? It is completely one of them. This should be against the Terms of Service Amazon. 1:00 I was surprised but still shocked and disgusted by their behavior. What happens in Indiana? First Jared from Subway, now this.

But dear reader, will analze this book completely, because they do not want to give the impression that I'm just biased against the so-called brothers genius Gottfried.

1. The art has not improved. Artists do not develop over time? Clearly it is not the case.

2. "The life of selfish, dull-witted Puner." Is this just self writers?

3. This is not a classic work of the graphic novel medium. None. You are not the Frank Miller, stop pretending that it is.

Snowman eventually melt.

Another great collection!

Another great book of comics. These snowmen characters get funnier and funnier with each new collection. The drawings are much sharper and easier to see the detail, the humor is pun-filled but still hilarious, and the addition of a couple more characters just enhances the fun. A great collection and would be recommended to anyone.

Memorable Wolverine Short Stories

Collecting: Savage Wolverine #18-23

Bonus: 4 pages of sketches & code for digital edition

This collection is a beautiful finale to the Savage Wolverine (volume 1) series. As with the the previous collection, Savage Wolverine Volume 3: Wrath (Marvel Now) , this collection is more a series of vignettes than a connected single story arc. When these vignettes work, they work amazingly well.

The first and final stories are by far the best. The first story set against the Chicano rights movement in 1963 is brilliantly done and builds to an emotional crescendo. The final story is one of those amazing Wolverine pieces that sets him at his most animal and his most human at once: Wolverine is being hunted both by a pack of wolves and by a group of men as he faces danger in the snowy Canadian mountains. The artwork by Jonathan Marks on this final story is arresting. Marks uses a an almost watercolor-inspired style with intense flashes of color. It is murky and beautiful and haunting.

Unfortunately the middle of the collection doesn't quite meet the high bar set by these two stories. The short stories in the middle include an episode where Wolverine and Jubilee team up to escape an AIM plot. Next, Wolverine meets an old nemesis against the historical moment of 1929 Chicago's St Valentine's Day Massacre. And finally there is a two-part story set in World War I.

Overall, this collection is enjoyable. I also like that it comes with a digital code--the short story format is perfect for quick reads on the commute with a kindle or phone, but the artwork is so good it should be appreciated on paper. I'm happier seeing Wolverine being the "best there is" with claws and healing factor than the armor suit that is going on the other Wolverine series (see: Wolverine: Three Months to Die Book 1 ). Compared to the other book, the Savage Wolverine title is almost like the classic Wolverine stories that made him the character we all love.

Another fantastic collection of Jonah Hex bounty hunter stories. A fun read.

I have been a big fan of the Jonah Hex, bounty hunter from hell series for quite a few years. His relentless pursuit of evil and vicious criminals is one of the reasons I love this character. He may not be a friendly or warm and fuzzy kind of a guy, but he always keeps the focus on his primary objective which is hunting down and destroying criminals, thugs and bullies. This graphic novel collection (Jonah Hex: Bury me in Hell) came from the comic books #61 to #70. This action packed collection includes the following stories:

Honeymoon bullets, The package, Bury me in hell, Dead man's breakfast, love sick, There is always trouble to be found, The dead of night, Snow blind, Casket canyon, Wanted dead or alive, and many other great stories. There is always a unique twist to all of Jonah Hex stories and the graphics are always fantastic. This is an entertaining and action packed graphic novel.

More Jonah, More mayhem

I really love reading Jonah Hex stories. I started reading them back in the Weird Western days and just haven't stopped. I did not enjoy HEX when he went to the future, but I read them anyways.
This collection starts when he was married to Mei Ling and bounces around his life, timewise. Leave it to Jonah to find lowlifes who can be lower than the ones he just left behind. Of course he gets shot and bit and stabbed along the way. But he always seems to come out a survivor. Some of the tales wonder why. One has him facing his father and another his doom. But I won't give away anymore in case you intend to lay down some bucks and read it yourself. Or maybe your local library can get you a copy. Happy reading.

In the continuing tradition of great stories from the creative team behind Jonah Hex, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, team up with some of the great industry talents like Jordi Bernet, Ryan Sook and Eduardo Risso. This trade contains those great stories that prove just how successful they can craft a story that is befitting of those artists. Like every other story that comes from the previous Jonah Hex trades, the are just chock full of adventure and satisfaction. If you haven't picked up a Jonah Hex trade, I highly recommend this one.

At the age of 11, Prince Handley prophesied to people that he would one day work for God ... and at the same time told them that men would travel to the moon. People had not even postulated travel to the moon at that time. He was laughed at for the double prophecy - mostly for thinking that he would ever work for God! Having done graduate and other studies in 11 colleges and universities (including two seminaries plus the University of Judaism), he holds a Lifetime College Instructor's Credential to teach college in three different areas of study: 1. Engineering; 2. Business and Industrial Management; and, 3. Communication Services. For the last five years, Prince Handley has been President / Regent of The University of Excellence, an online study forum. One time, while alone fasting in an animal shed, $100,000 was placed under the door to him. Prince Handley believes that the God of the Prophets and the Apostles - the God of Israel - is still doing MIRACLES today. He teaches that by knowing Messiah Jesus (Yeshua HaMashiach) in a personal way people can have access to the miraculous love and grace of Almighty God. One of my favorite teachings from Prince Handley. This teaching clearly explains how quantum physics and faith work to accomplish God's will on earth, and in our individual lives. "Quantum physics" is not a difficult concept that only scientists can grasp. After reading this, you will understand what scripture means when it says that "faith is the substance." Rather than being stuck in the past, or tied up in what we see in the physical world in the present, believers need to understand how everything fits into the future. You will want to reread this, as there is so much valuable and in-depth material.

A MOTHERLESS CHILD is the life story of Entertainer, Songwriter, Actor and Educator Shelley Fisher from a two-month old baby boy in racially segregated 1942 Mississippi, whose mother died as the result of untreated complications of childbirth. Raised by an abusive pseudo religious Grandmother until she chases him through the cornfield with a shotgun.

After moving to the West side of Chicago at age twelve and facing a neighborhood bully he becomes totally immersed in some dangerous street gang activity. To escape the streets he joins the Air Force at age sixteen by changing the year on his birth certificate with the help of a community social worker. Shelley returned to Chicago after just four months with an Honorable Discharge to join a traveling magazine crew supervised by one of The Tuskegee Airmen selling periodicals to celebrities such as Chuck Berry, The Isley Brothers and Jazz great Sarah Vaughn.

Back in Chicago he and two other low level criminals rob an illegal numbers operation and a high stakes poker game after which he ends his criminal life and enrolls at the Crane Jr. College to be mentored by Music Teacher James L. Mack and discovered his musical talent. There he would meet and work with some of the finest musicians of the era including several who were part of Chess-Cadet Records. Fisher paid his dues in the ‘Windy City’ sharing billings with Eartha Kitt and Stevie Wonder and co-found the Aries Record Company. He chooses to perform in Oscar Brown, Jr.’s musical production Summer In The City over a secure career at Johnson Publishing Company before going to Hollywood to pursue his dream.

He would find success in Hollywood landing a co-starring role in a motion picture, playing piano and singing in some of the finest lounges like The Sportsmen’s Lodge, having his music recorded by Lou Rawls and on Motown Records. Then he would become romantically involved with the wealthy widow of a famed songwriter and work to create a multi-million-dollar Audio-Visual center, but cocaine and betrayal leads to an almost fatal encounter with the LAPD. Following an emotional breakdown Shelley realizes that unless he totally abandons his playground and playmates in Los Angeles he will not live to realize his dream and returns to Chicago to successfully teach the Blues as a cultural heritage in two public schools located in the infamous Cabrini-Green neighborhood.

Fisher shares his personal involvement with Maurice White and members of the original group Earth, Wind & Fire in its formative period. He shares his experiences after leaving Hollywood to work and reside abroad for twenty-three years in Canada, Japan and Europe composing and performing on-camera his original music the Cannes Film Festival Golden Palms Award winning film Calliope.

In 2000 he returned to the United States and fulfill a dream to perform in Las Vegas at the MGM-Mirage Resort for three consecutive years. But in 2004, while en route to the Las Vegas airport, Shelley suffered a hit and run automobile accident and died twice in one day. Left with a severely injured left forearm, he loses the ability to play the piano but after a long recovery period and eight surgeries he reinvents himself as a stand-up vocalist, performing on cruise ships and major concerts in Japan.

In 2013 Fisher was inducted into The HistoryMakers an organization that documents the contributions of prominent African-Americans from President Barrack Hussein Obama to Poet Laureate Maya Angelou. He has received Letters of Commendation from United States Senators (Harry Reid and John Ensign) of both political parties for his contributions to the Las Vegas community. His is a story of overcoming life’s obstacles to make contributions to the young and to the older members of society. Shelley Fisher remains active in the Entertainment Industry and as a motivational-inspirational speaker.

I was honored to get the hard copy of this book from a book party and it was exciting beyond belief. You will not put this one down! This author has such insight into the world of music of the 60's. 70's 80's and even now. This is more than an autobiographical journey, it is the journey of a time of a people and the things we need to do as a society to keep the proverbial beat going; to keep uplifting a society by exposure to music.. the arts in general. He shows us how gifts can change a life with proper instruction and tutelage. There are some highly amusing scenes as a young man, Motherless , yet comes of age all the time growing and thriving. It's one you can't put down. It is recommended reading for all, but doubly so for us Baby Boomers, and those who relate to the African American experience. A great Christmas gift!

Very suspenseful and well worth the read!

This is a great book and has a very unique storyline. The courtroom scenes were very realistic and were some of my favorite chapters. Starting in chapter one there are certain parts throughout the whole book where it was difficult to put the book down. There were plenty of characters with motive and ability to commit the murder and I went back and forth with my suspicions and exonerating characters in my head, until the truth was revealed in the end. In addition to a great story, the writing and dialogue are really well done and the whole book flows wonderfully. There are also some great messages, including how one can find out who their true friends are when all else seems to be against you. This is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who loves mystery, crime or legal thrillers.

It was a fun and fast read.

It was a fun and fast read. Unlike some books that start slow like the first climb up a roller coaster, this one starts off w/some exciting scenes and then builds up to the big climax.

Fantastic thriller that keeps you guessing

First, I love suspense. It's my favorite genre, which most people know about me. Second, I love a good who-done-it, and this was fantastic!

Mike and Helen are college sweethearts, building their life and family. Mike works long hours at his law firm, trying to make partner. The stress he's under causes horrific nightmares. Nightmares that have physical repercussions. He wakes one night to find his hands around his wife's throat. A few nights later, Helen is dead and Mike doesn't know if he killed his wife.

This book is fast-paced and flows well. I was trying to guess who it was the whole time. Treg does a good job bringing out emotions in the characters, and you can almost feel what they feel.

The ending was definitely a surprise,and I love the way it ended. This was a great debut novel, and I look forward to seeing what he comes out with next!

Thor Bjorgolfsson is a self-styled 'adventure capitalist' and was Iceland's first billionaire. Born in 1967, his earliest business deal was persuading his father to lend him $80 to buy vintage Marvel and X-Men comics, an investment that he still holds. He made his first $100 million in 2002, from the sale of his Russian Bravo brewery business to Heineken. At the age of 40, Forbes magazine estimated his wealth at $3.4 billion and featured him on its cover.

There is more than one side to a coin (The Icelandic Bunker Mentality)

An interesting read from the other side of the table, I recommend it to any Icelander as a healthy counterweight to the monotonous media and public opinion what happened. Everybody's story is different, even if they all took part in the same play. Being Icelandic, and having both lived and worked extensively abroad I have sympathy with Thor, Icelanders (as do many other nations) tend to view themselves in a mirror that does not give a true reflection and then the story nation distorts the picture even more when they describe what they saw.

The personal account by this "ueber-achiever" in business is a valuable and awesome read for anyone who has investments in the real economy.
The tremendous value and wealth creation Thor Bjorgolfsson has achieved by starting real businesses from nothing or building them up from fledglings is truly admirable and is very well presented. And, his near wipeout resonates personally to anyone who even to some extent has been a victim of the financial breakdown of 2008. His subsequent recovery again through real businesses and his thoughts on what he learned in the process is educational. Overall the book reads like a thriller. I give it five stars.

One of the best books on business I've read in the last decade. Thor's mea culpa on the Icelandic collapse was more of a "how to" than an "how not to". A bit self-justifying, and so slightly apologetic...it felt like a successful man's plea to be understood. And I understood. I am grateful that Thor wrote this book. A+.
