About the Author
Paula LaRocque was assistant managing editor and writing coach at The Dallas Morning News for 20 years. She also taught writing at Western Michigan, Texas A&M, Southern Methodist, and Texas Christian universities. She worked as a consultant for the Associated Press; the Drehscheibe Institute in Bonn, Germany; the European Stars & Stripes, and for many other institutions, businesses, publications, and government agencies. In 2001, she received the Associated Press Managing Editors Association’s Meritorious Service Award for Exemplary Contribution to Journalism. Her columns on writing have appeared regularly in Quill magazine for nearly 25 years. She has authored three nonfiction books—including her popular 2003 work, The Book on Writing: The Ultimate Guide to Writing Well. Reviewers praised her first fiction, Chalk Line, a Ben Gallagher mystery published in 2011. She earned a BA degree in 1971, Summa Cum Laude, and an MA in 1972 (Western Michigan University).

Hard to Put Down

"Monkey See" by Paula Larocque was a hard book to put down. It drew me in from the first page and kept me guessing right up to the end. The characters were so well drawn, I felt like I knew them. The head detective, Ben, had just enough flaws to be lovable. This would make a good book to take on vacation. I highly recommend it.

And the amazing part is

A well-written book is a movie for the mind...and this book is one helluva movie!! Vivid descriptions of the characters, the scenes and the shocking murders will keep you up at night trying to figure out how and why it all happened. To be perfectly honest...I don't read a lot of murder mysteries so I approached this book rather cautiously. For about the first ten paragraphs....maybe not that much. The story is intense, and it turns out, in spite of what seems to be a series of impossible to connect grisly murders, in the end it all ties together. And the amazing part is, the characters are fiction, but the plot isn't!! I was shocked to discover that, but I assure you, it makes the story even more intriguing. It really is one of those "can't put it down books." I'm ready for the next one!

Masterful blend of mystery and suspense with dashes of humor

I loved reading Paula LaRocque's first mystery "Chalk Line". It was a real page turner. Her second novel in the Ben Gallagher mystery series, "Monkey See," did not disappoint. This beautifully crafted mystery is engaging, full of twists and turns and dashes of humor which made it an entertaining read. The characters are well-developed, complex, and colorful. I wished I read it slower so I could savor this book. It was hard to put down! I look forward to more books from this talented author.
