Yes.
It is twisted?
At times.
Will it slap you in the face?

UTTERLY BEWITCHING. I ADORED EVERY MIND-WRECKING MOMENT OF IT.

“Do you know what it’s like to not be able to change something?”
How do you even beginning reviewing a book that left you utterly speechless? This fascinating, astonishing, gripping story completely mesmerised me, stealing my mind away from the very first sentence and bewitching it with a reality that kept me questioning everything in it. Including my own mind. Unlike anything I have ever read before—from its atmospheric setting and the level of detail in every single scene, to the meticulous pace and unexpected points of view—this phenomenal book quite literally consumed me cover to cover. I felt mentally ‘stranded’ at the end of it, unable to return to normal life and stop thinking about all that unfolded, and you know what? I absolutely adored every mind-wrecking moment of it.

Calla Price is an eighteen-year-old girl from a small coastal town, whose unusual childhood of being raised in a funeral home has made her the target of constant mockery and ostracism by other kids of her age. But nothing in her young life has touched her as deeply and as permanently as growing up with a twin brother whose mental disorder has forced her to act as his protector ever since he first started hearing violent voices in his head as a small child. She has often felt unworthy of her own mental stability, wishing it had been her born ill rather than her kind, beloved brother—the brother who has always run to her to quiet the demons in his head and seek comfort from her—but she has embraced her role as his guardian with no regrets, putting his wellbeing before anything and anyone else.

But it is her mother’s sudden death that changes Calla’s life forever, leaving the family under a heavy cloud of grief, disconnected and adrift, and leaving Calla drowning in her own heartache and guilt for the hand she believes she played in that tragedy. Facing her last summer at home before she goes to college, Calla’s life sees its first ray of hope when she meets Dair, a handsome but mysterious young traveller, whose mere presence in her life starts awakening something in Calla that she’s never felt before—optimism. However, the more time she spends with Dair and the more happiness she feels while in his company, the more her guilt grows. And that guilt is only exacerbated by the evident deterioration of Finn’s mental state. By hearing her brother’s voice as well, we see the true extent of his illness, we get to witness it firsthand, and it is a frightening sight. But we also see his unconditional love for his sister and his inner struggle to stay as sane as he can be for her sake. And we see the way her growing closeness to Dair affects him, how much he needs things to stay the same, and how guilty he feels for feeling that way.
Dare, however, is not just a handsome Englishman who gallops in and steals Calla from the reality of her own life—his own secrets weigh heavily upon him, affecting his every interaction with her, and setting the pace for the way their relationship develops.

A slow building, carefully plotted scenario, a psychological thriller of sorts, which then culminates in a jaw-dropping finale which sends our minds racing in a million different directions. I am not sure a review could ever truly capture the mood of this book, the unique way it plays with our minds, because every single word in it serves a multitude of purposes, manipulating our thoughts being just one of them. I was so totally immersed in it all that I felt every icy raindrop, every chilly breeze, every lazy sea wave. I absolutely adored this story and even though it leaves us in a happy-for-now place, I am already hungry for more. But also very happy to wait a little while I put my poor heart back together stitch by stitch…

SPELL-BINDING...GET READY TO HAVE YOUR MIND BLOWN and love it!

Spell-binding. Haunting. Tainted with madness, and jam packed with mystery. These are just a few of the words that come to mind as I sit down to write my review on Nocte. Courtney Cole is a genius, her writing style is fluid, her imagery and descriptiveness are well beyond anything I’ve ever read. There is just something about the way she pieces together phrases and words that just give it that cutting edge of brilliance. I had a feeling of excitement while reading this book, excited for myself for experiencing it and excited to witness it fireball its way through the book world - taking readers by storm. The plot, the characters, the insanity, the sheer thrill - all are things that will keep you on the edge of your own sanity until you have devoured this book.
Death strips a person of dignity, but I don’t have to be the one holding the filet knife
Calla Price is a tormented girl. Growing up in a funeral home hasn’t been the most flourishing of environments for herself and her twin brother, Finn. Feeling the ridicule from their peers and struggling to face her brother’s mental illness takes a toll on her, more than she is willing to admit. When tragedy strikes their family, the grief and guilt threatens to sink her, to suck her down into the black abyss. Watching her struggle through such a staggering loss, I truly felt the emotions that she was going through. Her determination to carry on, her fierce need to protect her brother from his own evils, that was what I loved most about her. Characters like that are simply unforgettable, they become a part of you in a very real way. When a mysterious stranger enters her life, will she be able to explore the feelings he brings out in her? Or will her responsibilities force her to turn her back on what could be?
Even though he’s clearly sophisticated, he’s still as comfortable as my favorite pair of jeans
Adair “Dare” DuBray is all man. Tall, dark and hand-me-some now, there is nothing and no one that could possibly deny he is temptation at its finest. After a few encounters with Calla, its very clear that she is what he wants. While I enjoyed the sexy package that he presented, what intrigued me the most about him was his hidden secrets. His past was strictly off limits in all discussions, and I found myself wondering as Calla did, just what he was hiding under all those good looks and drool worthy accent. The more entangled the two became, the more curious I was to discover more about the man that threatened to steal Calla’s heart. As Calla’s grief multiplies and Finn’s episodes increase, is Dare strong enough to shoulder her issues? Or will the insanity send him running for the hills?
I feel his heat, I feel his presence, and I ache to lean into it, to fold into him, to absorb his strength
There are books that you read just for enjoyment, and then there are books that become a part of you. Nocte is a story that will leave you breathless, have you sweating through the thrills and hanging on the edge of your seat. Be prepared, go in with an open mind and be ready to have your mind blown. In short, read the damn book.

In Review: Nocte (The Nocte Trilogy #1) by Courtney Cole

I have to be honest here: I have no idea how to review this book without giving away everything that makes it nothing short of fantastic. I absolutely refuse to spoil one single second of this story, so expect a short "OMG BUY THIS BOOK" type of review.
From the first page, Nocte will grab you, sink in its claws and hold on tight until the very last word, when you're left gasping for breath and desperately wanting more. Seriously, I kept trying to flip pages on my iPad, knowing that couldn't be it. There had to be more. Yes, there is a cliffhanger... and it's a doozie. Consider yourself warned.
This book is beautifully-written and a glorious mindfu¢k. I've read (and LOVED) quite a few dark romance novels, but none of them have ever been quite like this. The underlying mystery unravels slowly and organically, page by page, as the story goes on. When it's time for you to read this book, make sure you clear your schedule. You won't want to put it down once you've started.
With complex characters, sexy romance, a great mystery and more twists and turns than you can wrap your head around, Courtney Cole knocked it out of the park with Nocte. I've been a fan of Courtney's new adult books for quite awhile now. But now? Now I want more books just like this one. There's still a little over a month to go in 2014, but there's a pretty good chance Nocte will wind up on my best of 2014 list. Verum, the second book in the Nocte Trilogy, is at the top of my "must have" list for winter 2015. But, it's going to be a long, painful wait until February...
