Hal Jordan of Earth is the greatest hero of the Green Lantern Corps, the intergalactic force that keeps the peace throughout the cosmos, but there are thousands of other Green Lanterns, most of whom are not even human. This new graphic novel gathers some of their stories in one volume for the first time, in which these heroes face both the evil of those who would stand against them and their own inner conflicts.

Genuine Bronze Age insanity
By Kid Kyoto
The Green Lantern corps are an interstellar police force armed with power rings that can create anything the users can imagine. While the first two volumes in this series reprinted short stories focusing on the alien members of the corps this book reprints Green Lantern Corps #201-206 from 1986.
Hal Jordan, Earth's original Green Lantern is joined by John Stewart (his African American replacement) and 5 aliens (Arisia, Katma Tui, Kilowog, Salaak and Ch'p) to protect the Earth. The 7 Green Lanterns soon have to face not only Hal's old foes but also enemies from their past and their own unique problems.
There was a lot of experimenting during this period. Writer Steve Englehart and artist Joe Staton had already had Hal Jordan quit and be replaced, then had the Guardians of the Universe leave, and now they brought Hal back but as part of a team of Lanterns. This experiment lasted about 2 years and featured some of the most bizarre and original Green Lantern stories around.
But these first few issues are a bit rough, featuring some generic villains and basic superhero action. Actually the superhero action is pretty bad. In order to challenge one Green Lantern (much less 7) with lackluster foes like Sonar, Englehart writes them as idiots never using their rings at anything like their full potential. The coloring also has problems, the power rings famously cannot affect the color yellow. Except when the colorist forgets this in which case they can take apart yellow robots and sandstorms with ease. The book also suffers from one of the main problems of the whole Green Lantern idea, their beat is much too large. Each Lantern is supposed to be responsible for a section of the universe with countless worlds and billions of life forms. So when 7 of them desert their posts to hang around Earth and fight bank robbers it's hard not to think of them as slackers. Englehart tries to rationalize their decision but his reasons never really work for me.
The good news is the sheer insanity Englehart brings to the stories. In one issue you get the secret origin of Ch'p, a funny animal tailor-made for a Disney cartoon. But the story is played completely straight, with heroic chipmonks shooting acrons at alien invaders. Then you get the bizarre affair between a 30-something Hal and Arisia a 14 year old teen-aged Lantern. In later issues the series would get stranger still.
I read these books back in the 80s and when re-reading found them OK, but I think unless you're a big fan of Englehart or the Green Lantern Corps there's some potential but not much to recommend this book.

Simplistic and cartoonish treatment of the Lantern Corps. Should be reserved for Fans only
By A. Hammour
I was looking forward to read these issues from the late 80s. They were a bit disappointing. Simplistic and cartoonish. The superhero action was not terribly exciting. The drama not that satisfying. It was in these issues (and in the few Green Lantern Issues that preceded them) that Guy Gadner started acting like a Macho Jerk, and he gets tiring real fast. Arisia is the only interesting Lantern member among the group here, even Hal Jordan is boring in his "experienced big brother" role.
I expected much more from Steve Engleheart. His website mentions that this run of Green Lantern was a very big bestseller. Maybe, but it's not very memorable!
