About the Author
Bob McCarty is the author of two nonfiction books, Three Days In August: A U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier's Fight For Military Justice and The Clapper Memo, and one crime-fiction novel, The National Bet.
A native of Enid, Oklahoma, Bob graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in journalism in 1984. During the next two decades, he served stints as an Air Force public affairs officer, a political campaign manager, a technology sales consultant and a public relations professional.
Bob's first nonfiction book, Three Days In August (October 2011), chronicles the life story and wrongful conviction of Sgt. 1st Class Kelly A. Stewart, a highly-decorated Green Beret combat veteran. Learn more at ThreeDaysInAugust.com.

I've just finished the National Bet and really enjoyed it from start to finish

I've just finished the National Bet and really enjoyed it from start to finish. Right from the start, gripping details about minor characters pips your interest while never giving so much detail as to bog you down and get off track from the main story line as it slowly weaves itself together. The author shows a well researched knowledge of government organizations and law enforcement techniques as well as an awareness of the story's locations in different cities and states. This is highly commendable for a fiction novel. I normally take quite a while to read a book but finished this one in no time because it held my interest so well. I couldn't seem to put it down for the last three quarters of the book. I look forward to further books from the author and perhaps a further story of Joe L, the hero of this book.

Easy Read with interesting plot

I like McCarty's writing style when he is wearing his journalist hat. He is tenacious if nothing else. Usually concise and on point, Bob believes strongly in his subject and is a confident writer. One of challenges I see facing writers who write as journalists and as novelists is scaling writing for news and opinion pieces for their day job and allowing themselves the freedom to write as a novelist at their kitchen table at night. I give McCarty high marks for an intriguing plot. The sinister introduction of a toxin into the population through such an innocuous means was clever. The story kept me engaged. Mostly. Portions felt rushed and at times a bit wooden but he does develop a good story.
I did strongly identify with Kastens and his frustration in dealing with his congressional representatives.
In short: good story but could stand more character development. Keep at Mr. McCarty.

Good book and story once you get past the initial Obama bashing

The first 12 of the 42 chapters largely revolve around the ills and near-future near demise of the nation and the removal of Obama from office. I almost gave up, expecting more of a mystery/thriller.
I think the book would have been better if it had moved more quickly into the actual thriller part, which is pretty good. Good writing, no typos to speak of, and good word usage. Decent character development. A bit incredulous here and there in the thriller part, but overall a good and original plot. It would have gotten four stars from me if not for what seemed like political pontificating at the start. Some degree of a Washington shake up made sense as part of the plot - it just seemed to me that part got a little carried away.
