A glimpse of the 'real' Thailand

In First Tales of a Thai Village Tony James gives us a fascinating insight into a side of Thai life little known to the thousands of tourists who pour into Bangkok and the coastal resorts of Thailand each year. This little gem of a book describes daily life in a remote rural village hundreds of kilometers off the beaten tourist track.in a community still clinging to many ancient Khmer traditions and beliefs. In Ban Somboon, James recounts, the spirits of the dead linger long and are part of daily life - along with smart phones and plasma screen TVs!. This is a great and unusual read, highly recommended.

Charming tale with good writing

Being a fellow who also loves Thailand, it is fun and interesting to read about the life of a farang who had the courage to live his dream. Tony James captures the mood of village life, bringing the lives of his friends and neighbors into our imagination. If you have seen the small towns and smelled the mostly interesting aromas of the Thai countryside, this story will warm your heart. I look forward to the "Second, Third and Fourth Tales of a Thai Village."

I too have traveled in and out of Thailand for years.
I see myself in many of the incidents that made for a very readable and enjoyable book about the life in Thailand, through the eyes of a Farang. The main difference between Tony and myself is that I have not become a pensioned resident.
Looking forward to the next installment, if there is one.
