The TMNT IDW Universe continues to expand

"Secret History of the Foot Clan" serves to expand on the new TMNT series. Much like DC's New 52 or Marvel's Now undertaking, IDW has rebooted the TMNT series from Mirage Studios & previously Image Comics too so it's the perfect jumping on point for new & old fans alike. If you're a hardcore turtle fan it's very difficult not to like this comic with its in depth history of feudal japan between Splinter, The Shredder, & The Foot Clan. The art is just as amazing from the character designs to the stunning color work, to the jaw dropping panel layout's that compliment this intensely fast paced tale. I'm super happy that IDW has taken much care & precision in handling Mirage Studios once star property. IDW's TMNT series & it's various mini series' & one shots are hands down some of the very best comics out there right now. Buy this book.

Shredder's History

I've always enjoyed the TMNT after being initially hooked as a kid by the cartoon, and I only recently found how much more depth there is to the turtles mythology after reading a little of the first hardcover of the Eastman/Laird series and most of the current IDW series. But I've never known a whole lot about Shredder's background except that he and Splinter disagreed in a past life, Shredder murders Splinter and the turtles in their past life. This gives you a much more fleshed out story about the Foot clan as the title suggests, and Shredder's rise to power. To me it was very interesting.
An added bonus was Mateus Santoluoco's art. I've been following him for a little while and seeing the previews for the book have made the wait for this one feel like an eternity. But I finally got to see it in print, and man, it looks good! I really like his stuff, he injects a lot of character into each turtle. Every page is just fun to look at and soak in. Also glad to see he's the artist on the main series now too! (as of vol. 6)
So if you're a turtles fan, definitely pick this one up! I really enjoyed it!

A Good Background Story for the Foot Clan

In previous incarnations of the Shredder, it was really hard to figure out his story and how/why he became so power hungry and evil. After all, how many kids wake up one day deciding that they want to kill people and take over the world? IDW fills in some of the blanks on how Shredder.Oroku Saki grew up, his relationship with and climb up the ranks within the Foot Clan, was first introduced to the Utroms, and how he became the villian we know today.
Mateus Santolouco is the primary artist in this volume, and his art is beautiful. While it's not my favorite look for the Turtles, it's definitely fluid, the action scenes are well boarded, and he really knows how to give the boys great expressions (particularly Mikey!). This is another "must-have" for any Turtle fan. Recommended!
