Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Volume 12, by Osamu Takahashi

An alternate take on the famous series! By now, Shinji, Rei, and Asuka thought they knew the drill, but they don't know this one — namely, the giant drill coming down from the even more gigantic eight sided . . . thingie . . . hanging over the streets of the virtual Tokyo-3! Who's behind this new menace — Doctor Akagi, her daughter, or the man who fascinates them both? Heck, who fascinates everyone!

Twelfth volume. Twelve isntances of Shinji acidently coping a feel.
By Dave Xenu
We're now twelve volumes in to The Shinji Ikari Raising Project (though it's up to 14 volumes in Japan), a series that has topped English language Manga sales charts. Angelic Days, another alternate take with some similarities to this series was done in six volumes. The Sadamoto's manga adaptation of the series by the twelfth volume begun the events of the End of Evangelion and is looking like it will fully wrap on the fourteenth volume. Though Sadamoto's adaptation took seventeen years to reach its twelfth volume Takahashi has diligently managed within six years. So twelve volumes and six years later where has the story gone?

Absolutely no where.

The early volumes of this series were a lot of fun. The characters felt like natural extrapolations into a less harsh environment. There were some character developments particularly in relationships between Shinji, Rei and Asuka and some elaboration of the setting. On top of that Takahshi's art work was spot on. Of the reimaginings of Evangelion inspired by the sequence in the final episode of the TV series Raising Project for a time seemed to be the best.

The problem is there has been absolutely no progress since around volume three. The main thing that happens in this series now is that Shinji will fall onto/bump into/be fallen on by one or more of the female characters and accidental end up in an intimate situation. In a volume from the middle volumes of the series it averages about once every 20 pages. In this volume it happens appropriately enough twelve times. Twelve. I counted. It's the only thing that motivated me to finish reading this volume. That's about once every 15 pages. Add in the two pages of set up per accident and page of reaction (usually Asuka hitting Shinji) and that's about a third of the page count accounted for. But it's even worse than that, much of this volume is dedicated to setting up situations purely for that purpose. For example the opening story in this volume they go ice skating... yeah. I might sound a bit joyless labouring this point but really, being generous, if there was ever any entertainment value in the tripping over sequences it was exhausted several volumes ago. It wasn't always like this, the first two volumes each had only one instance, they weren't as laboured or used as the main focus of events. For the actual dramatic content we have Seele attack the labs computers and a combat simulation which echoes an angel battle from the series. All of which has already happened in earlier volumes. There's another painful sequence where Gendo saves the day in a ridiculous way, again par for the course. The fan service has crossed a line to the point where it makes reading quite uncomfortable. It's abundantly clear this series has degenerated into a sad parody of itself. There were some hints of the plot moving forward in the middle volumes but that's not happened here.

The only upside Osamu Takahashi consistently excellent art work. His artwork was great in the early volumes and he has only improved. The drawing of the characters is on par, sometimes even better than Sadamoto's manga, which is quite an achievement since Sadamoto was the original character designer. Also Dark Horse have done a consistently solid job with their translated editions. Those are the only reason for second star in the rating.

I know there are lot of OCD Evangelion fans out there like myself. We will pick up everything Evangelion regardless but I suggest just depositing this one on the shelf without reading. Aside from that I can recommend this to no one.

Second verse, same as the first!
By Jordan Reed
Did you love Volume 11? And for that matter, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6...? Then you'll love Volume 12, because it's just like all the others, only more so! Might as well be an anthology, "greatest panty shots and pratfalls of evangelion". I'm a huge Eva fan (so much that I even put up with the alleged art of "Angelic Days"), but even I'm getting tired of the stupid humor and stale sameness. Will this series ever get beyond accidental pervert jokes and come up with a semblance of a story? Doubt it. Shinji spends so much time with his face firmly pressed between breasts or legs that it's a wonder he doesn't die of suffocation. And where's Kaworu? His head might be floating in LCL for all you see of him. Volume 12 is nothing Fans haven't seen before: personal time between Shinji, Rei and Asuka becomes way too personal, strange virtual reality becomes stranger fan service, and Gendo saves the day in seriously unbelievable ways. Two stars just because I love all things Evangelion, not because it deserves even that much.

Same as Before
By T.NAKAJIMA
It is pretty amazing that "Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project," a spin-off comic of the popular franchise, has been serialized for nearly eight years since its first publication in June 2005. The fourteenth volume is already out in Japan, and that means about one volume in six months. I once complained of the series doing the same thing over and over, but considering highly competitive nature of the comic industry in Japan, this is something impressive.

Anyway, things do not change much in volume 12, in which Shinji, Asuka and Rei go skating and practice life drawing. As before, Shinji keeps stumbling onto girls and accidentally groping. There are lots of "panchira" (panty shots) and other fan service stuff, and no Kaworu and no Kaji. Who are they?

In the fourth chapter, people at Seele, the mysterious organization, finally remember that they are supposed to do something, so they start attacking the (virtual) city of Tokyo-3, with a big, eight-sided thing. What follows is the "Yashima Operation" spoof, with "reckless" Gendo showing what he can do.

The manga creator Osamu Takahashi's artwork is as good as ever, if not refreshing anymore. What the comic needs is creative ideas to further the story or develop characters, the hardest part for a long-running series.
