I have not got this one yet and am basing the rating off of the other releases by Radio Spirits. So far every volume they've released has been digitally remastered (You don't realize how good that sounds till you listen to an episodes that hasn't been remastered after one that has.) The good thing about the Radio Spirit releases is that you don't usually get the same episodes over and over, unless they rebroadcast it with a different Lamont and Margo. I'm looking forward to getting this and to future releases of The Shadow from Radio Spirits. These are the episodes included with this volume;
The Hypnotized Audience 03-27-38; The Blind Beggar Dies 04-17-38; Power of the Mind 04-24-38; Murders in Wax 05-15-38; House of Fun 10-22-39; Murder Incorporated 12-17-39; The Killer's Rendezvous 12-15-40; Nightmare at Gaelsberry 02-02-41; The Phantom Voyage 02-16-41; Death Rides a Broomstick 03-02-41; Murder From the Grave 04-06-41; The Ring of Light 11-23-41; Dead Men Tell 03-01-42; The Werewolf of Hamilton Mansion 01-05-47; When the Grave is Opened 09-14-47; The Face 09-21-47; Murder and the Medium 11-30-47; Death and the Easter Bonnet 04-17-49

Dead Men (LOTS of dead men)
By M. G Watson
If you've read any of my (numerous) reviews of THE SHADOW on Amazon, you know I have a love-hate relationship with Radio Spirits. On the love side, the quality of their digitally remastered episodes can't be beaten, and they have in recent years discovered more than a dozen "lost" shows, restored and released them, much to the delight of fans who thought them lost forever. On the hate side...well, while nobody should begrudge a business for making a profit, the prices for these collections are hefty at best and mildly extortionate at worst, especially when you consider how easy it is to obtain bootleg copies for next to nothing. ( I support Radio Spirits by buying their merchandise, so I'm entitled to bitch.)
Now, to cases. The Shadow is the alter ego of a wealthy, adventurous man named Lamont Cranston, who learned the secret of invisibility while studying hypnotism in India as a youngster. Cranston chose to devote his life to "protecting the innocent and punishing the guilty" and uses his Shadow persona to attack crime in all its forms, from mad scientists to racketeers, foreign spies to garden-variety hoodlums of all types. With his lovely (and trusty) friend and companion Margo Lane at his side, The Shadow wages a one-man war against evil, his mission statement being, "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit...crime does not pay!" If that sounds naive, well, it happens to be true if The Shadow is after you: you may slug Cranston with a sap...you may (and probably will) kidnap Margo...you may poison, irradiate, stab, set aflame or just plain shoot a few people...or a few hundred...but you won't get away with your ill-gotten cash. The Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men, and he spends most of his time kicking the hell out of it.
This particular collection features eighteen episodes spread across much of the show's 1937 - 1954 run on the airwaves, and all three of the men who form the "holy trinity" of actors to portray The Shadow: Orson Welles, Bill Johnstone and Bret Morrison.
They are:
Orson Welles:
The Hypnotized Audience: The Shadow must foil a daring plot launched by a master hypnotist trying to free his murderous brother from death row.
The Blind Beggar Dies: The Shadow tangles with a pair of extortionists putting the arm on local beggars.
Power of the Mind: A foreign scientist friendly to America is kidnapped by spies, and The Shadow's only hope of rescuing him is a telepathic connection.
Bill Johnstone:
Murders in Wax: The Shadow investigates a human trafficking ring with a unique method of smuggling aliens into the country.
House of Fun: A carnival sets the scene for a grisly murder investigation.
Murder Incorporated: Lamont and Margo butt heads with a gang selling spousal murder as a business.
The Killer's Rendezvous: A cross-country flight gone mechanically wrong strands Lamont and Margo in a hotel with fellow passengers, who include an escaped murderer looking to add to his toll.
Nightmare at Gaelsberry: Lamont and Margo are trapped in a lunatic asylum where the lunatics are running the show.
The Phantom Voyage: Lost at sea, Lamont and Margo are picked up by a ship full of sinister mysteries.
Death Rides a Broomstick: An ancient and grisly curse stalks a wealthy family, but the Shadow suspects there may be more conventional motives behind the murders.
Murder From the Grave: The Shadow grapples with a macabre insurance-identity scam that swaps live men for dead ones...and vice versa.
The Ring of Light: An ancient ring with supposedly mystical powers becomes the center of a greed-based bloodbath.
Dead Men Tell: The shadow investigates mysterious deaths that defy medical explanation but seem to have a very earthly motive: greed.
Bret Morrison:
The Werewolf of Hamilton Mansion: The Shadow tracks what may -- or may not -- be a bloodthirsty werewolf.
When the Grave is Opened: Graveyard body-snatchers willing to kill for their corpses attract the Shadow's attention, but what are their motives?
The Face: A brutal serial murderer is on the loose, and at the top of hit list? Margo Lane.
Murder and the Medium: An escaped convict, a clairvoyant who might or might not be a fake, and several murders keep The Shadow hopping.
Death and the Easter Bonnet: Margo's purchase of a hat triggers a bloody struggle against a ring of international spies.
This collection varies somewhat in subject matter, with The Shadow fighting spies, psychopaths, gangsters, racketeers, mystics and in some cases, what might or might not be the supernatural: curses, werewolves, and mediums with hidden agendas. It also features some of the better episodes the show ever produced, such as "The Face," "Death Rides a Broomstick," "The Ring of Light," and "Death and the Easter Bonnet." However, I had to penalize it a star for the fact that A) it is overpriced, B) it lacks any new "lost" episodes to really spice things up. That's probably not fair, but if you're a true afficianado of the series the chances are high you already have most of these episodes, in which case you've got to pony up a hefty sum for just one or two shows, and C) the episodes, while almost universally good, solid and entertaining, are a little light on the greatness this series produced on a surprisingly regular basis. I very much look forward to the day when Radio Spirits unearths a few more lost episodes. With something like 400 still unaccounted for, it can't be very long.
