Review
"Flash Blood, much like its main character, is competent, methodical and dogged in pursuing its goal. Unfortunately, that goal is to freak you the hell out. Fortunately it's a lot of fun getting there. The Arklow books rank alongside Sara Gran's Claire DeWitt series as the best weirdest thing going in PI fiction today. Joseph Hirsch is scary good."
- Jedidiah Ayres, author of Peckerwood
"Flash Blood, with its redoubtable protagonist (to call him "hero" would be misleading), somehow manages the high wire act of balancing all the conventions of the detective/mystery novel genre while artfully dodging all its cliches. With FLASH BLOOD Joseph Hirsch establishes himself as a major player in a crowded field. This is a terrific novel, not to be overlooked or missed."

A Vivid, Fast-Paced Detective Thriller - More Than Your Usual "whodunnit"
By D. Donovan
I like my action vivid and my stories fast-paced. One of the first things a thriller reader will note is Flash Blood's attention to detail, right down to the sights and smells of atmosphere that impart a 'you are there' feel to almost every page.
Flash Blood is the story of what emerges when a man is pitted against the impossible.
It represents a pivot point in Detective Arklow's life, plain and simple. As such, it will immerse readers in a world of good and bad choices, and it powers all these choices with a potent protagonist whose ultimate goals and reality prove subject to change without notice. Detective novel genre readers, take note: this is a far more complex scenario than your usual 'whodunnit' - and therefore, far more satisfying a read.

Solid detective fiction with just enough strangeness to be really intruiging
By D. S. Atkinson
I'm not normally one for detective fiction, but this book is a solid enough example of the genre to keep me reading in that aspect alone. It's tough written, suspenseful, and has a good pull that draws the reader along nicely. He part that intrigued me most though was the fuzziness at the edges that isn't so common in this genre. Some questions, arguably perhaps the most compelling, may not get answered precisely. There may not be a neat little bow. Hirsch manages to make the reader accept that, though. Perhaps not see how it could finish another way. It's actually a little surprising how well it works. Either way, I'm glad I started reading.

Ho ah’ A very awesome book cover
By Tony R. Parsons
After 20 yrs. as a PI Detective James Arklow (Fairborn Technical College Professor criminology) is considering retiring. A man named Dan Maple (drug counselor, VA) shows up at a gas station in Cincinnati in a yellow VW where James was also getting gas. He had been to James book reading.
Soon after Dan showed up at James house & offered him $100,000 to take his case. He promised another $100,000 if James could find Thaddeus Thad Kelvin Smith a missing drug addict & Afghanistan war veteran (PTSD) from the VA in Pittsburg (Steel City).
Dan had acquired Hepatitis C through a transfusion & sued/won $5 million dollars.
James agreed to take on the case.
James 1st stop was the London Bar owned by Arktos (Greek). James ask him & Eric Underwood if they knew/heard about Thaddeus.
James hires James Bender (26, detective intern) who is wanting to accumulate enough hours to become a licensed detective.
James is staying at Carnegie Extended Stay #300 & is now aka Agent Chris Farnsworth with Disability Group Unlimited. He is looking for information on Thaddeus. Strike 3.
Next call was to Allegheny County Morgue & then the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office. Nothing.
Bingo, marriage license bureau Lori Stevens-Smith (HS, phlebotomist certificate) she was 19 when the 2 got married.
Thad (Al Amriki) had once been stationed at Darmstadt, Germany (22nd Infantry Brigade, 32nd Infantry Battalion, Charlie Company), Kandahar, Bagram, Salerno & then the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Salerno, Afghanistan.
James Bender is waiting on a report from National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). What will he uncover?
Lori told PI James Arklow that Thad had lost his left leg in a mortar attack in Kabul while on a Top secret mission (TSM). What was the TSM all about?
Eric Underwood (parolee at large) was looking up medical records. Will he find anything?
Who is Rehan Hamza?
Where all will PI James Arklow travel to & will he crack the case for his client Dan Maple?
My fond memories of lots of Philly Cheesesteak.
Ho ah’
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow & wow again, a very well written Non-fiction, history, political, war book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge amount of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make great Afghanistan War era movie, or mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.
