1 Peter (Reformed Expository Commentary), by Daniel M. Doriani

Many Christians around the world today face severe persecution, while others daily feel the weight of cultural pressure against them. The apostle Peter speaks to this as he reminds us that Christians are aliens and exiles in an often-hostile empire. Yet we are simultaneously the chosen of God, equipped by Jesus’ work for us and in us to live faithfully in our dual identity.

In this exposition of 1 Peter, Daniel Doriani explains how the work of Christ enables Christians to live with hope, joy, and faithfulness in a pagan world. He also explores Peter’s emphasis on the kind of life that pleases God—a life that includes respect for authorities, just or unjust; godly behavior as a wife, husband, or elder; and, by God’s grace, good deeds, courage, and a firm stand in the face of trials.

As are all the books in the Reformed Expository Commentary series, this exposition of Ecclesiastes is accessible to both pastors and lay readers. Each volume in the series provides exposition that gives careful attention to the biblical text, is doctrinally Reformed, focuses on Christ through the lens of redemptive history, and applies the Bible to our contemporary setting.

Review
"Among the many expositions of 1 Peter, this REC volume stands out. It is exemplary in its careful handling of the text, theological robustness, and fresh writing. Unsurprisingly from the author of Putting the Truth to Work, which is the best treatment available on application, this exposition of 1 Peter is loaded with the best kind of application: faithful to the text, reflective, never forced, often telling." --—D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

"What a breath of fresh commentary air! Reading Dan Doriani’s contribution to the Reformed Expository Commentary series was like sitting in a lush garden filled with the fruit of seasoned scholarship, the hope of the everlasting gospel, and the implications of God’s transforming grace. My other ten commentaries on 1 Peter will now have to vie for second on my list of favorites. Pastors and teachers, mature believers, and brand-new Christians will all greatly benefit from Dan’s work in explaining the text and making applications to real life." --—Scotty Smith, Teacher in Residence, West End Community Church, Nashville

"Martin Luther said that to understand Scripture, the first books to read are Romans, the gospel of John, and—surprisingly—1 Peter. Doriani shows us why. In eighteen always-solid and often-brilliant chapters, he holds this epistolary jewel up to the light and convincingly conveys the beauty there. Doriani deftly deploys the understanding of a seasoned scholar, the wisdom of a longtime pastor, and the reverence of a committed disciple." --—Robert W. Yarbrough, Professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

Excellent sermons on 1 Peter
By Chris Ho
Good preaching will sustain the vitality of the church. That has always been something I deeply believed in. Alas, good preaching is also hard to come by. The good news however is that in this age, it is not hard to find good sermons recorded or written. This is where this commentary/expository sermon comes in.

As christians continue to move on to live in a post-christian society, 1 Peter will slowly become even more relevant to us — to live holy and upright lives in the midst of being marginalised or even persecuted. I found the sermons in this book to be very clear and wholesome. Daniel Doriani has not written a work that will reach a wide audience, it is not too watered down, or technical for anyone who’s studying the text for the first time or the twenty-first time.

Doriani does not skim on the exegesis and explanation part, taking time to show the readers/listeners how and why derives at points he makes in each sermon. Alongside with theses, Doriani also uses helpful illustrations to showcase his points in a way that all would understand.

This commentary by Doriani serves as an excellent guide for pastors in terms of teaching pastors good exegesis and good preaching. Thought it will not serve as a technical verse-by-verse commentary, I’ve found it helpful to read and meditate on these sermons. I recommend pastors and lay christians who really want to dive in to study 1 Peter to get this commentary.

Preaching the Riches of 1 Peter
By Erik Warren O'Dell
I listened to a sermon on 1 Peter by Dr. Daniel Doriani (prof. at Covenant Theological Seminary) and then came to read this commentary. The first thing that I noticed in regards to both is that Dr. Doriani writes how he speaks. With an engaging and humorous style, this commentary on 1 Peter reads like a sermon. In both the sermon and first pages of this commentary, we get a gifted communicator breaking down the history of the epistle and the theological context and concern of its author, Peter. Not "First Peter, but the same Peter of the first and second letters." (lecture to seminary students at Covenant).

This is not the first contribution of Dr. Doriani in the Reformed Expository Commentary series. He also wrote the commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew and the Epistle of James. I was especially impressed with the latter, as he made clear that while the apostle seemed to focus on a living faith by evident works, he also had a firm grasp on grace, which a lot of people miss. Well, Doriani exacts the same kind of careful scholarship in exegeting the texts and providing the benefits of a pastoral, applicable message without being overwhelmingly technical. This makes his contributions a welcome resource for sermon preparation, seminary essay-writing or personal Bible study--it's an "every man" resource that should not be missed.

My favorite study in this volume is the one on 1 Peter 3:13-18 on the "Right Kind of Fear" (pg 134). This portion of the letter is where we get explicit instruction on the task of giving a defense of the faith (apologetics) and how we are to respond when we encounter persecution. Dr. Doriani offers a contrast of the idolatrous fear of losing esteem and comfort and the kind of biblical fear that we should exhibit when we encounter challenges due to our faith. Of particular value is his word study on "fear" from various translations (NIV, ESV, NRSV, NASB and CEV) and the conclusion which should put fear in its proper perspective. In addition to the riches we get from the text, each entry comprises an acknowledgement of where we fall short (law) and the source of grace and strength from which to draw (gospel). This volume is not to be missed.

If you can, I recommend collecting all of the entries in this Reformed Expository Commentary series, but if you are not sure where to start, you cannot go wrong beginning with this volume on 1 Peter.

May you be richly blessed by this wholly biblical resource as I was.

More Gold From This Series
By Joey Parker
The Reformed Expository Commentary is a series that aims to provide a fresh exposition of the Biblical text for today's generation. In the series introduction the series editors (Phil Ryken & Richard Phillips) lay out the four fundamental commitments in this series. They are:

1) To be biblical - that is to pay careful attention to the text and exposit the Scriptures. There is less focus on the original language and structure and more focus on the story that the passage is telling.
2) Unashamedly Doctrinal - this series approaches the text from a Reformed perspective, as found in the Bible.
3) Redemptive-Historical - this means that they believe in the unity and continuity of the Bible, and interpret it in a Christ centered approach for all of Scripture.
4) Practical - by applying the truths found in the Scriptures to contemporary challenges in life.
Aesthetically this commentary looks great on the shelf. While this isn't a huge selling point, and certainly not a reason to chose one commentary over another, I must say that this one looks really nice on the bookshelf, especially when you have more than one in the series.

Daniel Doriani provides the commentary on 1 Peter in a recently released contribution to the series. I found Doriani's writing style to be quite readable, almost reading as a devotional commentary on Scripture. His engagement with the text and flow into practical application were quite beneficial for me. I was especially blessed by his treatment of 1 Peter 3:1-7. Here much is said about wives that does not fit well with our current society. To that Doriani says, "We can't dismiss Peter's message as a temporary command, a concession, or an adaption to the times that the church would outgrow. The message of Scripture always transcends it's occasion. Furthermore, the text has no hint that it is temporary counsel." Our understanding of Scripture cannot be dictated by the current times. Neither can it be dictated by abusing and misuses of Scripture. To this thought Doriani is helpful as well as he states that "Sadly, men have a fueled the critics by abusing their God-given authority and physical strength. If husbands loved their wives as they should, this passage would not be controversial. It is controversial, yet we will not read Peter accurately if we let contemporary gender debates become our lens for interpretation. It is better to acknowledge our preferences and let Scripture test them (1 Thess. 5:21), since God's Word is infallible and we are not. The prevailing mindset of our age does influence us. Therefore, if our Bible reading never challenges us, we probably aren't reading well. A faith that never upsets us is a designer faith, with the self as designer." These are strong words, but words that we must hear anytime we come to a difficult passage of Scripture.

Doriani is also helpful in understanding this passage as it relates to braided hair and gold. He rightfully concludes, "For both Greeks and Jews, extravagant dress could signify promiscuity or disregard of a husband's authority.... Modesty is the principal. The problem does not lie with braided hair or gold per se. A gold wedding band is a simple symbol of commitment. But elaborate hair took hours to prepare and so became a conspicuous display of wealth and rank. Inner beauty is what counts.....as a test of Peter's principal, we may ask ourselves how much time we spend on our physical looks and how much time we spend on our mental and spiritual strength each day. If we give more attention to hair and clothes than to mind and heart, something might be wrong." Ultimately, "we should long to please God more than to gain applause or admiring glances. We should pursue God's favor more than human favor, since his appraisal is more accurate, generous, and gracious." Instead of getting distracted by externals, Doriani shows that the heart is key and our desire for approval from God should be foremost in our minds.

Overall I was blessed by this new addition to the series. The Reformed Expository Commentary series continues to be a favorite of mine and this is another great volume in the series. Doriani writes in a very clear and understandable way and will surely be a blessing to anyone who works their way through this commentary.
