Trapline (An Allison Coil Mystery), by Mark Stevens

A chewed-up corpse high in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area leaves Colorado hunting guide Allison Coil mystified. Obvious signs suggest the dead man is the victim of a mountain lion attack, but Allison’s instincts tell her otherwise. Miles away in down- town Glenwood Springs, a controversial candidate for U.S. Senate is shot during a campaign stop as news-paper reporter Duncan Bloom watches, dodging the long-range gunfire. Trapline follows Coil and Bloom as their investigations collide, exposing the dark depths of human indifference.

Review
"Trapline is more than a mystery, it's a political thriller of sorts that resolves around the issue of illegal immigration ... Everything comes together in the end in a chilling tale set against the grandeur of the Colorado mountains." - The Denver Post

"This murder mystery has two things I love: a Western setting and two strong plots that coincide. Trapline by Mark Stevens also has two amateur sleuths who fit all of my criteria. They are strong characters who are competent in their fields, hunting guide and reporter, and as such they have license and the means to snoop ... (Stevens) is as good at writing action sequences as he is when emotions are at work. Stevens has a clean style and keeps the plot moving in this, his third mystery in the Allison Coil series." - Albuquerque Free Press

"...a well-executed and suspenseful narrative following the self-reliant outdoorswoman and intrepid journalist as they stay a step ahead of the police. The book is a thrilling read for fans of the genre, filled with twists, political intrigue and a dose of wilderness." - The Aspen Times

"Allison's third adventure (Buried by the Roan, 2011, etc.) combines a loving portrait of a beautiful area with an ugly, all-too-believable conspiracy that could have been ripped from today's headlines." - Kirkus Reviews

"Stevens harnesses the shadowy undercurrents of our time and spurs them to a gallop. Leading the charge is Allison Coil, a uniquely brilliant investigator who operates on instinct and has the uncanny ability to see the world on an elemental level." - Warren Hammond, author of Kop, Ex-Kop, Kop Killer and the Tides of Maritinia

Excellent Writing
By gerald
I have visited Glenwoood Springs many times over the last 55 years so the very graphic description of the area was easy to identify with and helped me visualize the movements throughout the book. Excellent writing and spellbinding plot that isn't easy to figure out as your reading the book Highly recomment.

Wonderful writing makes for a wonderful story
By Amazon Customer
One of the pleasures of reading Mark Stevens’ Trapline is the evocation of the open country — pines, elk, immense western sky — made inviting by Stevens’ prose. Stevens knows whereof he writes: descriptions of a horseback ride across a wild meadow or through an unmarked canyon are penned with detailed authenticity. Stevens may have had a USGS map in front of him as he wrote, but I suspect he wrote much of it from memory.

Many years ago when I finished reading The Sun Also Rises, I wanted to travel immediately to the Pyrenees to fish the Irati River. (I also wanted to meet Lady Brett Ashley — but that’s a different problem.) When I finished reading Trapline, my goal was to fish and hunt in the Flat Tops Wilderness in western Colorado. Since I reside in Denver, my chances of visiting Stevens’ country is better than that of visiting Hemingway’s.

The wonderfully evoked country is almost a character itself alongside the novel’s true characters: Allison Coil, her lover Colin, a newsman named Duncan Bloom, and a superb miscellany of police and Colorado mountain folk. The Flat Tops and the nearby city of Glenwood Springs are the focal point of activity involving transportation of illegal immigrants from the country’s southern border. Allison Coil finds herself involved because of a body found in the Flat Tops as she was preparing to guide hunters through the area.

Coil, a well-seasoned Colorado hunting guide, shares her expert knowledge of her craft — guns, bow and arrows, tracking — with the flatlanders she guides and with us readers. I loved Allison. Part of the fun of the book is Stevens’ descriptions of her methods of outdoorsmanship. After traveling alongside Allison through the course of the novel, one can imagine sharing the adventure, to ride and hunt and camp as well as she does, roughing it. A pretty thought while sitting in a favorite chair, holding Trapline in one hand and a scotch in the other.

The activities in Glenwood Springs, its inhabitants, its local politics and its investigative police are described in realistic fashion. The lives of the immigrants – both legal and otherwise — are equally well described, without overstating the political issues involved.

There are surprises in the book. The mystery of the body in the Flat Tops is resolved, of course; and various policemen and newspaper reporters make the hunt for the murderers an intriguing one for the reader. Over the book’s almost 400 pages, the reader’s perspective on the characters changes and, more interestingly, the characters’ perspective of themselves change.

Don’t read the book while you’re hungry. The continuing descriptions of Trudy’s fresh baked scones — blueberry, cheddar — served with poached eggs and broiled tomatoes, or scrambled eggs with broccoli and goat cheese reveals the careful and tasty detail Stevens puts into his work.

Trapline is guaranteed to snare you.
By Think Banned Thoughts
Some books need to sink in a little before you can fully appreciate them.

I finished Mark Steven’s new book Trapline about a month ago and I’ve been meaning to review it ever since, but time kept getting away from me. I’m kind of glad it did, because this a book that ages well. It’s a book with enough twists and turns and subtle nuances that letting it breathe in the back of your mind for a while helps you see the deeper brilliance of it.

Many books in the mystery genre, at least for me, are fun, quick, entertaining reads that I enjoy and then put down and rarely think of again. But Trapline is different. Trapline has staying power. And the author, Mark Stevens, is the reason.

On the surface, Trapline is a perfect genre book, combining mystery with the New West and bringing them both up to date.

Trapline is the third book in Mark’s Allison Coil mystery series.
Allow me to introduce you to Allison Coil, “this intriguing woman from the wilderness, who might have been bred from some magical concoction of tree bark and horse sweat.” She’s a backwoods hunting guide, offering her services to hunters of all shapes and sizes, even those who, “looked like they expected to hunt and hike or camp grit-free.” She’s very no-nonsense, get the job done type of gal. She embodies that old west sense of right and wrong, good and bad – there is very little room for grey in her life.

Trapline opens with a half-corpse found by Allison Coil’s first no-grit hunting party of the season. It looks like a mountain lion kill, though, “Tact suggested that you didn’t utter the deduction out loud unless you were prone to yelling ‘fire’ in a crowded theater.”

The more Allison ponders the scene, the less it feels right to her, though she can’t put her finger on why. Perhaps it’s just wishful thinking, because a mountain lion with a taste for humans would shut down hunting season faster than a city slicker tourist could yell yee-haw.

Meanwhile, down in town someone attempts to assassinate a U.S. Senate candidate after his big pro-immigration reform speech, partially delivered in perfect Spanish.

Allison is called in to consult and try to figure out where the shot could have come from, and who might have done it.

The two scenes don’t seem to have anything in common, but before long there’s no escaping that something darker is happening in Allison’s beloved Flat Tops.

Part of Mark Steven’s brilliance rests in his ability to hook us within those first few pages. He sticks his readers at the top of the roller coaster with just enough of a view to see that it’s going to be a fast-paced, twisty, turny ride – but we also know he’s not showing us the full scope.

As Mark takes us deeper into the world of Glenwood Springs and the Flat Tops, we begin to see and feel the tensions pulling at this small town. Immigrants are coming in and getting jobs. For the business owners hiring them, they’re a godsend, accepting jobs that no one else was applying for and doing them well. To others in the area, they are criminals – thieves, takers, moochers, pouring through the “tortilla curtain” in a “brown tide” of drugs and crime, stealing jobs from hardworking Americans and living on government handouts.

The tensions run deep and the fault lines are beginning to show. A candidate for U.S. Senate is just one casualty, but is the corpse from the woods another?

Within the pages of this fast paced mystery, Mark Stevens manages to show us just how few steps it takes for humanity to be stripped from “others” and how the very act of “othering” is the first slippery step down that very dangerous slope.

When Buried by the Roan came out, reviewers hailed Mark Stevens as the Carl Hiaasen of the west, and while that same environmental love runs through Trapline, I think this is the book that pulls Mark out of Hiaasen’s shadow and allows us to see Mark as so much more than just another enviro-thriller writer.

Mark is a writer whose deep love of humanity comes through on every page, in every character description, in every interaction and choice made on the page. He’s a writer not afraid to show us our ugly sides, if only so we can see for ourselves that we can do better.

I highly recommend Trapline, it’s guaranteed to snare you!

Also – Keep your eyes open for Mark’s new book, Lake of Fire, hitting stores this September!!

"This is a time of collective power, not the individual"
By Lawrance Bernabo
I have no idea why "Battle for Power" is an epic that begins in Volume 9, coninues here in Volume 10, and concludes in Volume 11 of "Path of the Assassin" ("Hanzo no Mon"), because it seems that it could be broken up into a series of stories. But writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima are ignoring all opportunities to segment their story into more conventional chunks. Since my habit in reading their work, which began with "Lone Wolf and Cub" and continued in their "Samurai Executioner," was to read one "chapter" at night before bed. That, of course, becomes impossible when the chapter spans three volumes, the final one of which is still in the pre-order stage.

The first one hundred pages of the story in the "Path of the Assassin Volume 9" began with a bloody battle, the political ramifications of which Tokugawa Ieyasu and Hattori Hanzo discuss at length. However, Oyakata sends the "suppa" Hachiya Sekiun to assassinate Ieyasu. Of course, since Ieyasu is destined to establish the Tokugawa shogonate, this is not going to happen. But Sekiun uses "dancing puppets," so the series of attempts that entail are certainly different, and of course how Hanzo deals with the threat is always interesting to watch, especially since Sekiun is partnered with a particular crazy woman ("a dark Miko"). By now we are well aquainted with the idea that most of the characters in these stories are two-edged swords, but Koike and Kojima keep coming up with twisted ways of making their point. One of the reasons these two are at the top of the heap (whether you call the particular mountain manga, graphic novels, or comic books) is because they invest even their smallest characters with memorable traits and backstories. We are also well aware that there are always plans within plans within plans, so we do not make the mistake of taking anything at face value.

The biggest battle sequence to date is found in this volume, but it is still the personal politics that matter the most as Ieyasy continues his climb to power. The great irony at play in this story is that while Hanzo insists that "This is a time of collective power, not the individual," the proposition is undermined by the special nature of Hanzo and his master as individuals, although certainly their pivotal realtionship can be classified as collective power on the micro level. Since nobody is going to start reading this 15-volume series starting with Volume 10, especially since it is the middle of this particular epic, there is no need to remind anybody that these books are published in the standard magna format of being read back to front (and right to left) and that the parental advisory for explicit content is always well warranted.

good but compicated
By Timoleon Kiritsis
Like the other two series "Lone Wolf and Cub" and "Samurai Executioner", "Path of the Assasin" is a very pleasant book for one to read. But unlike the other two series, there is a focus on the geopolitical events of that era in japan and much less battles. Also it is almost impossible to remember all the different names and charactes that take part on the plot.

Great Series
By The Monkey Boy H Bomb
A great story in the vein of Wolf and Cub. I personally think this story has more depth and variety than the afforementioned. Sex, violence, magic, ninja! What more could you ask for?! And before you reply to that rhetorical question... a cameo by Chuck Norris would be in bad taste!

Threads of the Past: Stories of Pioneer Women and Their Quilts, by Lanie Tiffenbach

Inspired by the author's immigrant ancestors, this is an intimate account of seven unforgettable women surviving extraordinary challenges and hardships in their new homes in America. These brave pioneer women express their dreams and losses and their joys and heartbreaks in the form of letters, diaries and other writings based on extensive genealogy research, documented facts and historical events. Spanning a time period from 1857 to 1939, their immigration and life stories are at the same time heartbreaking and heartwarming.

Sophia's family faces the dangers of the raw frontier of Minnesota, and they must flee for their very lives during the Sioux Uprising of 1862. Her sons later serve in the Civil War with tragic consequences. Her daughter Louisa tells a coming-of-age story and makes a surprising marriage, but struggles to keep her faith alive amidst terrible losses. Henrietta suffers the hardships of homesteading and living in a sod house to ensure that her three sons will never go hungry. Albertina goes kicking and screaming from a good life in Germany to a lonely life on the open prairies, with her family unfortunately arriving in Minnesota at the same time as the grasshopper plagues.

Faced with a life of shame in Bohemia, Magdalena risks an arranged marriage to a man in America. She loves having child after child, but is devastated by the deaths of many of them. Carolina dutifully follows her husband's dream and raises her family in a tiny log cabin on the harsh frontier. She feels blessed to have not lost any of her ten children, but tragedies strike later in life. Eliza, with a strong independent personality and known as a "hard woman", details her family's immigration from Germany to Minnesota, their daily lives, and hardships of the Great Depression.

The history and evolution of quilting in America from pre-Civil War times through the 1930s is intertwined throughout these stories, with special quilts representing the patterns and fabrics from each era. Threads of the Past is beautifully illustrated with over one hundred wonderful vintage photos and ephemera. The life stories of these courageous women are at the same time harrowing and hopeful, heartbreaking and uplifting, but always grounded in faith and love of family.

About the Author
Lanie Tiffenbach is a native of Minnesota and grew up in the area where her immigrant ancestors had settled some generations earlier and where many of the events mentioned in this book occurred. Interesting facts and rich family lore uncovered in her meticulous genealogical and historical research inspired her to tell the stories of her women ancestors. Lanie is also an avid quilter, and for this book she chose quilts from her own collection of antique quilts, as well as quilts she has made with vintage or reproduction fabrics and patterns from earlier times. Lanie Tiffenbach currently lives in the Denver, Colorado, area with her husband and has two adult sons and one precious granddaughter.

Threads of the Past --A Good Read for anyone who admires strength and fortitude in a family.
By Vicki Thomas
I was truly enthralled with the strong women and their incredible resiliency against the hardships that awaited them. I know the Minnesota winters and they can be brutal, as can the summer heat and humidity. It's hard to imagine the families leaving everything they know and care about in Germany to make a hazardous crossing into a new land. And that was only the beginning of the trials they must suffer through. Then the tragedy of disease, pestilence, poverty, and severe weather conditions that also tormented the farmers. The worst had to be the loss of their dear children.
The writing is well organized and engaging with remarkable subject variations. The element of quilts and quilting in each pioneer woman's VP wove harmony throughout the entire book. Each character has a distinctively different voice through their letters and journals. Lanie Tiffenbach did a great deal of research and showed much sensitivity to have written this wonderful book. I thank her for her dedication and gift for storytelling. Perhaps their will be many more stories to come from this author.

Genealogy, History, and Quilting
By Amazon Customer
A well-crafted book that should resonate with anyone interested in exploring their ancestor's past. The author vividly portrays her ancestors lives in Europe, their travels across the Atlantic and half of the United States, and their new life in an alien country. It's easy to lose yourself in the world of her ancestors - we vicariously experience their difficult lives in Europe, the treacherous crossing of the ocean, the terror and confusion of their new country, and their unwavering optimism. Despite enduring back-breaking work, war, natural disasters, and tremendous, unimaginable personal loss - they never give up. Weaving anecdotes about quilting into each ancestor's story depicts how quilting gave these hard working women the social and creative outlets for which they yearned - and deserved.

Easy to read
By Diane Hanson
Very well researched and written. Easy to read. A good reminder of the hardships that many of our ancestors endured as these experiences weren't unique to only the authors ancestors. The hard lives they had in Europe, the treacherous sea crossings, the struggles to settle new land and the many children that were born and died early, were brought to life through the letters and journals. After reading this book, I've very grateful that my ancestors were brave enough to come to a new country. Woven into all the stories is the love of family, their faith and quilting. Loved all the photos.

Still Going Strong
By A customer
Previously on Superior Iron Man, Tony Stark unleashed his new strain of Extremis into the city of San Francisco. It gave everyone who downloaded the free trial beauty, health, and an insatiable desire to party. But, being the opportunist that he has recently become (due to the events of the crossover event, AXIS), Tony never intended Extremis to be a gift and is now demanding that users pay an insane amount of money daily.
This second issue deals with the consequences of this. Crime is rampant as people desperately try to support their addictions and some people are starting to turn against Stark and the complete control he has over the population of San Francisco.

Much like the first issue, Daredevil is basically our protagonist. He sees (figuratively speaking) firsthand the issues that Extremis is causing and he isn't all that thrilled about it. This issue in particular is interesting to me because it gives us a little hint into what Daredevil's world looks like. It doesn't last very long but I thought the couple of pages with the enhanced-senses-other-than-sight-let-him-see-where-everything-is thing were pretty cool.
I have to add, though, that I'm not sure where this series is going to go after Daredevil leaves. Iron Man has by and large been the antagonist thus far, so.... what happens then? Will we start to see a change in Tony? To be honest, this question alone will keep me reading.

If there's one thing I can complain about, it's that we still don't know how Extremis works. That's something I'm really hoping they get into later because an app that results in a physical change in someone is pretty fascinating.

Overall, I still love this series. It has beautiful artwork, an appropriate level of humor, and it's simply a delightful read.

Worth all the bad comics you have to read to get here.
By Travis Starnes
Much like any good or bad idea in comics, it works better for some characters than others; I thought that Original Sin was a fantastic concept and the vast majority of the spin offs were very well done, but some of them were a massive drag with retcons for the sake of fitting into the series. These tie-in comics have been massively up and down, but books like Carnage have been really fun and the inverted Luke Cage is a spectacular tantrum-throwing diva. But the one character who has resolved so fantastically is Tony Stark. Ever since his battle with alcohol he has been rather boring; no more party guy, no more ‘bond style’ women draped over him, he’s almost become a paragon of virtue to stand beside Steve Rogers. Well not anymore!

Our new Tony Stark is at the worst of his excesses; think of Iron Man 2 where he has the drunken birthday party – now make him sober, but that self centred and egotistical. And now multiply that by 10. He is not evil, not in the traditional cackling in the corner, white cat stroking want to blow-up-the-world style. No this is far worse; he wants to make the world better; for a price. The last issue ended with Tony giving away a new phone app that downloads his Extremis 3.0 into the users, making them young and beautiful forever. Sorry, did I say ‘forever?’ That was a lie; if you read the small print on the app then it was only for a short time, after that it costs, a lot, every day.

I have to say my one ‘issue’ with this book is that really it should be called ‘Superior Daredevil’ because right now Tony is the antagonist in his own book. Matt sees what is happening, the dark road that Tony is taking the whole of the city down, and he makes it his task to stop him. I worry long term for the series if Tony is going to remain like this for its duration* then they are going to have to walk that fine line between him being an egotistical maniac and simply becoming a flat out villain.

Without giving away the actual plot points, this book does something which you almost never see in comics. Every (good) issue will end with a moment that either makes you think, shocks you, introduces someone important or resolves an arc. This book does much the same with a fantastic ‘wow’ moment, but what it also does is give you another four moments each of them in their own way worthy of being the cliffhanger to the next issue. I feel quite a lot of the time with modern comics they each have one thing to tell you and they give that to you on the last page, the other 21 pages in the book are merely a procrastination to get to that point. Nothing could be further from the truth with this issue and there feels like there is something important happening on every page. If they can keep that up for an entire series then this will be something special.

I feel it is important to mention that as this springs from the car crash that is AXIS, you have to read a lot of dross to get to this point. However I would happily have to read a series three times a long as AXIS if I knew I had a title like this at the end of it. I expect that there will be a fair few more ‘Superior’ titles coming out in the future, so far Marvel has a 100% record with them in terms of story and art quality and long may it continue.

Hilariously "evil" Tony!
By Sam Quixote
Tony Stark is now “evil” because of what Red Skull did to him in Axis. He’s in San Francisco where he lives in a Tron-esque upside toilet (seriously, that’s the visual!) and he’s given Extremis 3.0 out to a lot of people for free. It turned them young and beautiful - and then he pulled the plug. First taste was free, renewal costs $100 a day or you stay your same old safe. Ooo, that evil Tony!

The desire to use Extremis 3.0 again is making people act irrationally as they do desperate things to get the money to pay the subscription, and that’s where Daredevil (who’s also living in Frisco these days) draws the line. It’s Daredevil Vs Iron Man in an issue imaginatively titled Daredevil Vs Iron Man!

If I was unsure about how I felt about this series with the first issue, I’m fairly certain I don’t like it now after the second. The concept of being “youthful and good-looking” is of course desirable - if you’re neither. But the first person we meet who’s trying to rob someone because he wants Extremis 3.0 is both youthful and good-looking. What’s going on?

The visuals are a major problem with this story. Later on when the mugger’s dad threatens Tony, he’s forced by Tony to take Extremis 3.0 himself. Do we see how an app on a smartphone could possibly turn someone ordinary into a supermodel? Nope! One panel he’s regular-looking, then the next he’s lost his middle-aged paunch - but his clothes still fit him anyway!? It’s a real let-down because seeing how Extremis 3.0 works would be cool but this creative team are skirting around it totally unimaginatively.

At Stark’s upside-down toilet base, Tony gets the drop on Daredevil ridiculously easily. One panel they’re standing apart a few feet, the next Tony’s holding Matt up by the throat? I’m sure Daredevil would’ve seen the move coming, I mean the guy’s got mad senses and Tony’s not Quicksilver! It’s just bad comics storytelling.

Another thing about Extremis 3.0 that bothers me is that it’s affordable if you use it every so often, like on weekends. Who couldn’t splash out on themselves every now and then with $100 for a makeover that actually works? Most people are ok-looking - not super-model good-looks but totally decent - so giving them an option to look super-awesome for a special occasion every now and then doesn’t seem that evil to me.

When I was reading Superior Spider-Man, I was rooting for Otto. I saw he was being a more subversive version of Spidey, but he was doing a good job being Spider-Man and I liked his character the more I read of him. Dan Slott had created a complex, multi-faceted character in the Superior Spider-Man. Tom Taylor’s Superior Iron Man is a douchebag. I’m not rooting for him to make more money for more Tron-themed toilet bases! I don’t want him to succeed after he’s acting like every other one-dimensional villain. He’s a crap, totally uninteresting character - the very opposite of “superior”.

Superior Iron Man #2 is a very weak issue from an increasingly contrived series. Taylor’s writing is as average as ever though his plotting stinks, and I guess Yildiray Cinar does his best with the art to cover up the holes in the script but that HQ design is just awful.

So That Just Happened...: True Tales of Childhood and Other Shenanigans, by Rachel Moore

This true story follows Rachel and her younger brother Brad as they grow up in the rural Midwest. Because of the private location (lack of neighborhood kids to play with), bossy Rachel and slightly-naive Brad are given the opportunity (forced) to make their own fun.

The siblings find themselves in many random situations ("Yes, that giant tortoise DID SO break my arm!") and dealing with ridiculous problems ("I have just spent all afternoon peeling 108 grapes... how can I convince my family to pay me for this?")

Their antics often get them into trouble by their often bemused and always bewildered parents, whose main contribution to the story lies in shaking their heads and saying, "And just what made you think THAT was a good idea?"

Written through the comical and idealistic eyes of a child, yet with the added understanding and wit of an adult, this book will keep you laughing as you reminisce about your own childhood... and wonder how you ever survived it.

2nd Edition

Who knew that a summer thunderstorm and his lost little boy would conspire to change single dad Cayce D’Amico’s life in an instant? With Luke missing, Cayce ventures into the woods near their house to find his son, only to have lightning strike a tree near him, sending a branch down on his head. When he awakens the next day in the hospital, he discovers he has been blessed or cursed―he isn't sure which―with psychic ability. Along with unfathomable glimpses into the lives of those around him, he’s getting visions of a missing teenage girl.

When a second girl disappears soon after the first, Cayce realizes his visions are leading him to their grisly fates. Cayce wants to help, but no one believes him. The police are suspicious. The press wants to exploit him. And the girls' parents have mixed feelings about the young man with the "third eye."

Cayce turns to local reporter Dave Newton and, while searching for clues to the string of disappearances and possible murders, a spark ignites between the two. Little do they know that nearby, another couple―dark and murderous―are plotting more crimes and wondering how to silence the man who knows too much about them.

Intense and slightly terrifying thriller - absolutely worth the read.
By My Fiction Nook
First off, trigger warning: This book depicts some on-page acts of violence and rape, so if that's a trigger for you, be aware before reading.

Secondly, this was unlike anything else I've read from this author, whom so far I knew as someone who wrote sweet M/M romances.

There's a wee bit of a romance inside, but it's not crucial nor does it take center stage.

What this book is however is terrific. And terrifying.

From the first scene, in which we witness the abduction of a young girl, just barely a teenager, to the epilogue, this book takes the reader on a terrifyingly rapid roller-coaster, with an omniscient narrator portraying the multiple characters in this book, and making them all fit into the puzzle.

Cayce D'Amico, a single, gay father to Luke, a little 7 year old boy, begins to have visions, scary visions, after being struck by a falling tree branch during a storm. At first, he's confused and can't make sense of what he's seeing, but the pieces quickly fall into place, and he tries hard to do the right thing and help where he can.

Except nobody believes him, not until a 2nd girl disappears, and then only because the girl's mother and Cayce set out to find her and then do.

There's never a mystery as to who committed the crimes, as the omniscient narrator lets us see into the minds of the perps. Even so, this is an edge-of-your-seat read.

It's a bit of a character study too. We have Cayce, who's struggling to make ends meet and raise his son, are given background info on him, and can see, by his actions, that he's a good man, a man who tries to do the right thing, who puts others first. Then there's Dave Newton, the local news reporter, who starts out as a typical newshound, but then changes and becomes a friend and more to Cayce.

We get to explore Myra, and through her Ian, and their dysfunctional relationship. The author did a great job with this character, showing us through her actions and her thoughts that what may at first glance look like a monster in truth isn't, and that Myra can and does draw a line. I started to fear for her almost as much as I feared for Luke.

There are side characters too, all who have a role: Cayce's parents, the girls' parents, the police detective - and we're given glimpses into their minds as they participate in the events.

People die in this book, good people, some simply because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some are hurt because they make bad choices, choices that stem from being young and inexperienced, or choices that come from trusting strangers, some because they haven't yet caught up with the changing times.

Some passages were difficult to read, and I may have chewed on my nails more than I should have, but overall, while terrifying, this book was excellent.

It explores the human psyche, how a young woman might fall for empty flattery and find herself in a situation for which she is not prepared. How a woman can turn a blind eye to what's going on in her own house. How a single father, saddled with an unexpected gift, can rise to the occasion. How a mentally ill man can murder and rape, but can't fathom that he has pushed too far and brought on his own downfall.

There were two things that bothered me a bit - the inclusion of the doctor in the beginning, as I couldn't quite see the point of that, and Cayce's mother's actions toward the middle of the book. Her lackadaisical attitude in regards to putting her cooking above the welfare of her grandchild didn't make a lot of sense, at least not to me. While it fit her character as thus far presented, it bothered me that she would make such a dumb decision. And what bothered me even more is that Cayce seemed resigned to her stupidity, that he didn't even confront her about it. Not that it would have helped much, either way, but I would have liked to see him get in her face about it. Perhaps that happened off page later on.

Those are my hangups, though, and someone else might not react the same way.

The writing throughout is excellent, well-suited to the themes in the book, and clearly setting the stage for the actions. The author manages to create imagery that fit the scenes, making me feel as if I was right there inside the pages. It has a dreary feel throughout, despite it being summer, as if the evil that's inside is permeating the air.

I'm glad I read this. It's not my usual fare, and I was scared for a lot of it, but it was absolutely worth reading.

Blood Brilliant
By Portia de Moncur
This is one of those books that draws you in from the first paragraph and never lets you go. With the skill of a master storyteller, Rick Reed draws the reader into a dark place. A place, that while grotesque begs to be explored.

The reader is introduced to Cayce doing the mundane task of making dinner. But, the cold rain that begins to fall, just as he misses his son, foreshadowed bad things were just a Kindle click or two away. It reminded me of some early Mary Higgins Clark.

The character of Cayce is brilliantly crafted. He is not a perfect anything. Just an ordinary guy who ends up with an extraordinary ability. His role in this story is not that of psychic detective, but as a father. That alone made him a very relatable character. I read most of this book with my mama heart pounding.

Not just for the girls who are basically dead before the book starts, but for the child and almost child that were in constant danger of being The Beast’s next victims.

I also appreciated the fact that, while there is a romantic element, it stayed within the confines of reality. If you are looking for groping and humping like bunnies, you may want to pass on this. The attraction is there, but it is neither the time, not the place and both men accept that. In fact, for me, this is also the story of Dave re-discovering himself and his purpose.

As a rule, I don’t read horror or even suspense that is too graphic. I don’t mind murder, I just don’t want to see it on page. And while this title may be a touch to graphic for some, it was a very good balance for me.

Bottom line, Third Eye is just bloody brilliant. The suspense, the touch of romance, the secondary characters…hell, I loved every little bit and hope that Rick R. Reed shares this world with us again.
Highly recommend.

A Must read
By Crystal's Many Reviewers
Rick Reed is so consistently good, I always know it’s going to be at least a 4 star read for me even before I’ve laid eyes on the first words. This one is a bit of a departure for him and I was excited to read it for that reason. There’s a lot more darkness in here than his typical fare and it even edges into Stephen King territory (something that one of the main characters alludes to in the beginnings of the weirdness). I’m also a sucker for a serial killer plotline – not sure what that says about me – but it’s true.

The story opens with the harrowing description from a thirteen year-old girl’s point of view on just how she managed to allow herself to fall into the clutches of a psycho. It’s heartbreaking not only in the sense of the tragedy of it all, but in how well Reed takes us through her inner reasoning as to why it seemed like a good idea to get into a car with this stranger. Reed is spot on as he portrays her behavior and thoughts and reactions – going from wanting to impress a handsome man and not be treated like a child anymore, to discomfort and confusion, to outright panic and terror. I get chills now just remembering it.

Next, we are introduced to one of the MC’s – Cayce. He’s the notorious gay single dad in this small town on the banks of the Ohio River. It’s long seen its hey-day. And most of the residents just muddle through their daily lives as best they can. Cayce is hanging around his small home, pondering, when he realizes his seven year old son, Luke, isn’t in the front yard. A bad storm is brewing and he begins to worry over where his son might be. As he races around outside in the increasingly raging storm, he’s almost struck by lightning and a heavy branch breaks off a tree and whacks him on the head. After that event, he starts having visions of not very nice things. One of them involves a dead thirteen year-old girl.

Once you reach this point – which is essentially only the beginning – you cannot put this book down. I had to know what was going to happen and how everything would play out. Dave, a slightly older, Sam Elliot-esque reporter complete with a British accent, becomes involved in the peculiar situation Cayce finds himself in. As you can imagine – his weird visions are not treated with seriousness and almost serve to get him into trouble – as well as danger.

I loved the romance between these two very different men. It’s not the main part of the story, but it provides a feeling of hope. Both men have been alone and unlucky in love and they are brought together through tragedy and the hopelessness of finding these young girls when it’s too late to save them. How they work together to deal with all that’s happening is what made them work for me as a couple.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced story and would recommend it to anyone who loves reading suspense thrillers, crime or mystery. Be warned however - there is graphic violence and visions of child rape, if that is a trigger for you.

My rating for Third Eye is an enthusiastic 5 lizard claws.

The new reality show, Beneath the Blast, is poised to be the next big hit. Ten volatile contestants will be confined to an underground bunker for one month, during which they will compete physically, mentally, and socially in an attempt to win the one million dollar prize.

The production crew is well aware that their hands are going to be full running the show, but when it comes to light that they too are unable to leave the bunker or contact the surface, the situation becomes far more dangerous. They are faced with a dilemma: do they risk their jobs by calling off the game, or allow the rivalries and infighting to continue?

Beneath the Blast is a fast-paced and suspenseful drama that delves into the minds of every character trapped within the bunker. As tensions mount, their greatest challenge proves to be holding onto their sanity. Only one outcome is certain in this relentlessly gripping page-turner: anyone who does manage to escape will be forever changed.

Glad I Read it!
By Lena, ABLS
Beneath the Blast by Jeff Rorik

I have never read a book like this one before & it was interesting how it all played out. This book is about a game show host, her crew & contestants unknowingly getting trapped in a bunker, One hundred feet underground. The challenges proceed as planned until it because evident something is very wrong.
I won't go into detail because it will one, just summarize the story & there would be no point reading it, & two, this story is filled with so much betrayal & drama, you just have to read it to understand it.
I will say this, the beginning was a bit slow yes but when it finally picked up, it went all out. As you get further into the book, you began to see first hand how everyone's mind starts to unravel in different ways. This story reminded me of a soap opera, every character had a point of view (so no waiting for the series) and was up to no good. If you like heavy drama, deceit, manipulation, villains and heroes, This is A Must read. Did I mention a body count?

I give it a 4 star rating -Lena from Artsy Book Lovin'Sisters.

A Dramatic & Intense Character Piece
By Natalie Miles
Isolation. It is a terrible all-consuming feeling that can convince even the strongest of minds to become savage and brutal, trying to survive by any means possible and not caring who you step over to come out on top as the victor.
Isolation seems to be a popular theme nowadays in our entertainment viewing on television, with the likes of ‘Big Brother’ where contestants live in a cushy house environment with challenges set out for them every few days. Or there is the newer ‘Bear Grylls : The Island’ show which drops contestants into a harsh and remote, exotic environment in a view to get them back to basics, hunting for food, making shelters and finding water.

What both of these shows have in common is that the isolation becomes apparent very early on, with contestants breaking down at the thought of the loved ones that they have left behind, the thought that they cannot easily just get away from their current situation, if only for a few moments.

‘Beneath the Blast’ written by the talented Jeff Rorik is the perfect read for those who really enjoy a character driven piece. With a memorable cast of characters that you will be rooting for and others that you wish would get their comeuppance. The premise of the book (without giving too many of the twists and turns away) is that there is a ‘Big Brother’ style reality series going to be aired. However the twist on the regular house setting is that their ‘home’ for the duration of their stay is going to be a few hundred feet below the surface of the earth. ‘Beneath the Blast’ will be the title of this latest reality series and is going to put contestants in a nuclear bunker, something that seems to be right out of the ‘Fallout’ series.

But not long after the contestants get settled and the filming begins, than they and the few members of the production crew suddenly lose all contact with the outside world.

‘Beneath the Blast’ was one of those books that I just could not put down. After the fantastically impactful opening chapter, I found myself looking forward to picking up where I last left off and that is the sign of a good book.

There might not be any big action sequences, and there might not be anything paranormal or unexplainable. But there is something about the plethora of characters, driven by their very different personalities, strengths and faults that draw you in to this cramped world and guides you through.

The scary thing is, there aren’t any paranormal elements down there with them, there are no aliens or mass murderers that enter the bunker. It is just ordinary people trying to survive. What they become is a journey that both they and the reader must undertake.

I found myself reading this book, gripped by the horrifying acts and finding it hard to believe how quickly people fall apart when pushed to their limits, watching their integrity and honour disintegrate as so many of them lash out without thinking, wanting to have someone to blame for what has happened.

The contestants are made up of all the typical stereotypes that you usually find in these reality shows. The quiet one, the competitive one, the flirt, the doctor, the macho man, the cool headed, the manipulator. But not all of the stereotypes stick with their characters as the story progresses, all of them develop in one way or another, whether for better or worse. Some of them switch their stereotypes with other characters completely as it goes on.

Looks can definitely be deceiving with this mismatched bunch of characters and we never really feel safe as a reader knowing who to trust. Personalities flip so much that my original favourite character was not the same as my favourite character at the end. Another aspect that is interesting is how the hierarchy of the group is comprised and shifts.

Much like the ‘Lord of the Flies’, the strong leaders of the group emerge early on, splitting the group into smaller subdivisions that are all vying for the upper hand when they should be coming together as one entity, hatching escape plans rather than trying to get more rations than the others.

Reality series shows used to be referred to as social experiments and you really get a sense of it here. Relationships build and alliances form but with the ever changing scenarios the relationships between the characters either blossom or crumble very quickly. Every emotion seems to be heightened in the confined space of the bunker and the contestants and crew soon turn deadly.

Don’t get too attached to a favourite character, you never know what might befall them as things reach a critical level and their only chance might be to face the dreaded climb up hundreds of feet of the elevator shaft with nothing more than cables to cling a hold of.

I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of ‘Beneath the Blast’ and my only wish was that it had gone on longer or that we got to experience a longer period of time whilst they were in the bunker. It felt like their relationships were just in the developing stage whereas I would have liked to have seen them months down the line.

The explosive finale of the book had me gripped and I found myself saying a mental ‘Awh’ when I found that there were no more chapters left. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of reality shows , or of course those who like books such as the ‘Hunger Games’ or the previously mentioned ‘Lord of The Flies’, which are also about people who have to form allegiances and go against themselves and their better judgement in order to survive.

I can really see this book being made into something for either the big or small screen. Character driven pieces are all the rage at the moment and you do not even need expensive sets to keep viewers interested, as films like ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ has proved. Sometimes those small, confined settings work together with these unhinged characters to make you as a reader/viewer that more uneasy and unsettled.

A spicy, tasty mix of thriller and reality television, with just a few minor flaws marring the recipe!

One of the great things about digging through my pantry is the great variety of dishes that are contributed to it. There’s always something new, something innovative, some creative new take on an old dish out there to be found. Today’s meal is one of those creative dishes, combining some classic aspects of conventional thrillers, a dash of Lord of the Flies, and reality television. Will this be good, bad, or just ‘meh’?

Before we find out, let’s unfurl the ancient scrolls and consult the Starving Review laws:

I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

It turns out that reality television is a lot easier on my creative palate when it’s wrapped in a layer of meaty thriller. Mr. Rorik finds an interesting way to use the stilted, often manufactured environment of your average reality TV show to both set the stage and heighten the tension of the plot to come. When you have a group of people who are not only in competition, but chosen specifically to create a dramatic situation for television, the amount of dramatic tension to be milked to spice up the recipe multiplies.

Of course, that drama sets down squarely on the shoulders of the characters. If those core ingredients don’t pan out, the entire drama souffle will collapse. Overall, Blast brings a varied and fleshed-out cast of characters. Interestingly, this is accomplished with rapidly-shifting swirls of characterization, sliding from character to character for short scenes before moving on to the next.

You might be concerned that this could cause a breakdown of the plot. After all, if every character gets their swirls in the mix, doesn’t that tells us all about our antagonists’ plans? Again, credit the chef here for providing an expert hand here. While there are character scenes that foreshadow things to come, it stops there at foreshadowing. I can’t remember a single scene ruined by the characters revealing the menu too early.

The flaws in Blast are minor, but do leave their sourness on the cake. Firstly, the start of the tale is a bit clunky. As the cast is rather sizable, it takes some time before the story really gets going to let us get a bead on each of them and that leads to a bit of early fatigue from such a heavy first course. Once Blast gets to the main course, though, it goes down quite smoothly, but the early pacing is still off.

My other bit of critique would be in the plot device to get the whole ball rolling to start with. As this is a very early occurance, I don’t think this is SPOILERS, so let me extrapolate: The main premise is a reality show cast that winds up trapped in the bunker their show is set in. Part of the explanation for being trapped makes sense, the part that happens in the first few chapters, but the final explanation given stretched the bounds of my suspension of disbelief. As it happens right at the very end and didn’t QUITE break it, I was able to swallow it down, mainly as it really didn’t affect the resolution of the plot, but it was still a sour note at the end.

However, let me sum up by saying that the real, actual dramatic plot resolution is actually quite good. Overall, Beneath the Blast is a spicy, tasty mix of thriller and reality television, with just a few minor flaws marring the recipe. I’d suggest anyone who enjoys thrillers or reality television to give this one a read. Anyone else who would just enjoy a good read might also want to give this one a go, as it is a solid, tasty treat. Enjoy and good reading, good writing, and good luck!

FINAL VERDICT: **** (A spicy, tasty mix of thriller and reality television, with just a few minor flaws marring the recipe!)
