About the Author
Laura Dekker is the youngest ever sailor to circumnavigate the world solo, achieving her dream in 2012 aged only 16, having defied authorities in her native Holland as well as the elements on her 15-month-long odyssey. Of German and Dutch parentage, she now lives in New Zealand.

Born a Cruiser

Born into the sailboat cruising lifestyle, all Laura wanted to do was to return to that life on her own. Her dad knew she was capable but the Dutch Government got involved, thinking they knew better than her dad. I'm a graduate of California Maritime Academy and hold a USCG Unlimited Tonnage License, and I recognize that Laura has a 6th sense for seamanship. A great read, would recommend this book for every parent wanting to instill a "Can Do" attitude in their children.

Great story, well-written, filled with spunk, determination and intelligence

Well-written story of spunk and determination. Absolutely inspiring that such a young person can dream up something so strongly and be so determined to carry it out, even in the midst of all the challenges from the "adult" world.
As the story unfolds, I read it with excitement continually wondering how such a young person (especially in these days filled with mediocrity, yea, even state-guided mediocrity, disguised as "safety") can be so determined and tenacious.
This story inspires me to examine my own life and think about what I can do in my own life. What challenges can I take on to learn and grow and experience.
Thanks, so much, Laura, for the inspiring life and well-written account of it all.

Exciting story that shows that youth is not always wasted on the young. Have your teens read it!

I watched the documentary “Maidentrip”, I thought was intriguing but not particularly well made; it prompted me to read her book seeking the rest of the story. As it often is, it was much, much better than the movie. Laura’s trip is an amazing enterprise, it show everything that is good about entrepreneurial spirits. The narrative is simple, at the beginning a bit too technical about the sailing vocabulary, soon after acquiring the language the book becomes a smooth fun and entertaining reading. The book includes drawings and schematics as appendices depicting the boat that makes easier to follow Laura’s description. Regardless of ghost writing, this is a great story that I wish more teens would read. Laura shows that there are those rare exceptions in life were the quote: “Youth is wasted on the young” does not apply. She concludes by saying that her trip was as much an oceans of the world journey as it was a journey to change herself, to make her aware of who she is and what she wants her life to be. Reading it makes you want to drop whatever you are doing and go sailing to exciting places. I just hope her spirit remains undaunted throughout her life, and chooses to contribute her enormous leadership potential to the world in endeavours other than sailing; perhaps by becoming a global advocate for causes around environmental protection of the oceans.
