Relocation to NY

I wish the book was published few months ago! I relocated with my family to NY few months ago and was struggling to understand how things work here in NY. Things that seems trivial to you can be very different here and you will find yourself helpless many times. The guide has many good advices and I warmly recommend to read it few times if you actually plan a relocation to NY. Although we are here for few months I still found many good tips in the book in regards to credit score, driving license and other information that is still relevant for me .highly recommended!

This is the most comperhensive New York relocation book I ever had! If you are new to the city, this is a must read. It will save you lots of time and money! Even for people, like me, who know about the city a bit, the book is still very helpful! For expamle, I was struggling finding a new appartment to move in until I finds very useful tips from the book. As being said, this book covers all aspects of relocating to New York City: before, during, as well as after your moving. You will find information about bank account, health insurance, credit card, kids' education, tax report, restaurant, and even taxis and laundry services and lots more! Don't miss this must read, it is truely helpful!

Frankly, it was my "hand" book during this whole period. I read it when I first started to think about relocation, it helped me to understand why i am actually doing it (surprising!).... the book includes chapters that descibe every and each step of the process ... it helped me to make right decisions on each of those steps.
I highly recommend to read it at least once.
Personally, I am still "using" it being in NYC for 4 month now!

Fun and challenging for both beginners and pros

A great buy for anyone who loves word puzzles. The cryptograms range in difficulty to provide a challenge for people of all levels of experience. One night in December 1755, Stanisław Antoni Poniatowski, the twenty-three-year-old secretary to the British Ambassador in St Petersburg, was introduced into the bedroom of the Grand Duchess Catherine Alekseyevna. This marked the beginning of a torrid and clandestine affair which led to Stanisław being crowned King of Poland in 1764.

The young king was a dashing figure in the finest eighteenth-century tradition. He was a perfect illustration of the contradictions of Europe's ideological and religious viewpoints: he worshipped reason but was led by the heart; professed Catholicism but believed in Providence; toyed with the occult and practised freemasonry.

A great believer in art and education, he spent fortunes on cultural projects, and finding that he was blocked politically by Catherine, he put his energies into a social and artistic regeneration of his kingdom. He transformed the mood and outlook of his country and brought it to a new phase of reform and independence, culminating in the passing of the Constitution in 1791, hailed in Britain, France and the United States as one of the greatest events of the century.

Poland's neighbours, however, viewed this beacon of liberty in their midst with alarm, and as they invaded and partitioned it, Stanislaw was forced to watch the destruction of his life's work, and ultimately forced to abdicate, a broken man, deceived and disillusioned.

Stanislaw Poniatowski: Falling from A Tightrope

Stanislaw Poniatowski, the last king of Poland has to be one of history's most tragic figures. Elected to the throne with the help of his ex-lover, Catherine the Great of Russia, who by that time already held Poland in a stranglehold, Poniatowska constantly walked a tightrope, trying to strengthen his beloved Poland while not antagonizing its eastern neighbor.

Poniatowski couldn't win. Nationalists saw him as a puppet of Muscowy while the magnates felt the reform-minded king threatened their power.

Poland's May Constitution of 1791 was the last straw for Catherine and the Polish magnates. The country was subsequently divided between her neighbors and Poniatowski was taken to St. Petersberg to live out his remaining years.

Zamoyski is one of Poland's most able historians and this book is a very readable and enjoyable account.

Why do Americans choose to ignore the history of Central Europe?

A remarkable piece of history which is all but ignored by the world at large. This man's romance with Catherine the "Great" is as amazing as it is sad. Sad for the man who was the king and sadder still for Poland which disappeared from the map while it was making itself into a Republic. Such sadness and torment have to precede, it seems, the rebirth of this Phoenix/Eagle. Poland at this moment is the healthiest economy in the European Union. They learned the hard way.

This book I felt was deceiving, the font was very large, and it was lacking in pages. There were no color photos aside from the cover, and it did not give me any information that I could not find with a quick "Bali" google search. Sadly, I am returning.

Entertaining, funny, and makes you think. Can't wait to read Vol2

Overall, I liked it. I was reading it on my Kindle so didn't know how far into the story I was and at some point, after I'd been reading a while, I thought well, how far along am I in this story. I discovered I hadn't reached near halfway yet. So, I got comfortable and settled in to see where it would lead.

Some things I like a lot are the philosophizing, the references, the characters (development), and the feeling of becoming immersed into this world. I like the literary references, the RETE rules reference (hah), the historic and political references and whatever other ones. I like that you didn't stop and explain every one or try to translate too much inline. I got most of them and then found the glossary at the end, which I read through after the story.

It was easy to keep track of the characters. In some stories I read, the characters are not kept separate enough to keep them apart! That was not a problem here.

The story itself seemed to wander a bit at first but that became natural once I got to know the characters better.

I was sorry to get to the end but then remembered there are more volumes coming.

Reading the intro, it was not clear to me whether or not this would be a novel or non-fiction. By the end, it's clearly a bit of both.

Like I said, I liked it overall. I became attached to the characters and captured by the storyline. Picking up Volume 2.

he doesn't dumb it down

Disagreeing with a recent online review, this book is valuable for its sociological scholarly analysis. Essentially every other book currently existing on the topic of zines is nothing more than a very limited and stilted collection of samples from zines every zinester worth their salt has already heard of ad nauseum. While Duncombe is a little heavy on the utopic and overly optimistic naivete in regards to the ability of alternative media subcultures to change the dominant mainstream as we know it, it was very refreshing to read a book about zines that didn't seem to feel the necessity to "dumb it down" for the zine kids, many of whom are exceptionally bright. This is certainly worth checking out if you do a zine and are into thinking, instead of regurgitating the same old, same old, as far too many zines do.

The best book about zines yet written.

This is a sobering, inspiring book. Duncombe shows us the boundless potential of zines and zine culture. At the same time he diagnoses the failure of zines to reach out and become relevant to people outside our little "underground". All the effort and enthusiasm that we pour into zines is a small revolution, but if we all joined forces and poured that effort into a movement, we could truly change the system rather than just complaining and waging futile rebellion against it. This book should be required for any would-be revolutionaries, punks, zine creators, and thinking human beings.

A poltical approach towards the underground scene

underground culture born out of opposition to the mainstream media of the comsumer culture and the alienation caused by the whole capitalist culture is analysed in Duncombe's book in great detail.
The making of it,the meaning of it and the paradoxes and drawbacks it has are all introduced.
pros and cons well defined.Duncombe also draw the limits of the underground scene.I agree with his pessimisim about fanzine writers doing nothing more than just being politics by themselves.[what i mean is fanzine writers dont need to take political action as making a fanzine is keeping them busy (mind and time)]
What is most successful about this book is he didnt just write about the world of fanzines but explored through the social/economic/political structure of the USA. As a political science student and a fanzine writer i share his views concerning the new world order as an everchanging,imposing and even assimilating fact.(is it new?)
Well, i really liked the book even though at times i felt like he is repeating all again well i guess this happens when explaining such complex things (as economic,olitical things not fanzines)

Screwball Comedy Meets Noir

I’ve seen a lot of Sherlock Holmes plays of varying quality, but I’ve never seen one like “Sherlock Holmes at the Alamo.” Neither have you.

For starters, Holmes uses time travel to go to the aid of Davey Crockett and company.

Oh, and Holmes is played by a 12-year-old girl named Lydia, who also wrote the play.

That’s just part of the fun, a minor bit of amusing byplay in Murder at the Driskill. Like the first three mysteries in Kaska’s Sydney Lockhart series, the latest is a highly entertaining mash-up of screwball comedy (think 1930s movies) and Texas noir.

Murder at the Driskill finds Sydney, an intrepid 1950’s newspaper reporter, with a new gig in addition to her day job at the Austin American. She and her boyfriend, former cop Ralph Dixon, and their associate Billy Ludlow have formed their own private detective agency in Austin.

One of their first clients is a rancher who wants them to investigate his business partner, who is also his brother-in-law. Before they can even begin, the subject is shot and killed at the Driskill Hotel just as he is expected to declare his candidacy for governor of Texas. His wife confesses to the murder, but nobody believes she did it – including their client, who now wants them to prove his sister-in-law’s innocence.

Sydney and Ralph’s investigation turns up lots of motives – for killing their client. Everybody liked the victim, including his wife.

The 1950s were seldom as exciting as in this fast-paced and funny mystery, which is packed with action right to the end. The central problem around which the story revolves is an intriguing one and the solution is satisfying. What will bring you back to the next Sydney Lockhart novel, though, are the snappy dialogue and a cast of memorable characters – the child prodigy Lydia not least among them.

If you’re tired of the 21st Century, or just need a little break from it, pour yourself a martini and open Murder at the Driskill for the perfect escape.

While it has a HEA the road getting there is long & rough! This beautiful story captivated me with every single page from start to finish, it kept me on my toes, it's dark dirty and ooohhhh so twisted! I loved the originality & the realness. So many situations in which life can take you by surprise!

I enjoyed the POV swap between Beth and Roman. It was nice to see how the two of them registered each situation.
This was another quick read and I enjoyed every minute of it!
I really enjoyed the supporting characters as well...I wouldn't mind reading a spin off with another couple. =)

Usually sequels to books do not compare to the first book This amazing author pulled it off. I love how she was able to keep me captured from the beginning to end. 5 stars for both Taken and Haunted!!!! Great job, and if you decided to continue this series with other characters, I would buy them all.
